I had no fondness for mathematics, yet I became- proficient in its eieaien- ,tarj branches?, in my school days under the teachings of W. 1. N. Fitzgerald, which in full, is William Pitt Nelson Jitzerall. When, i'roiVsxor Javie.s, of West LVmt, was. traveling in Gun .adai he was served by an hostler's boy, aud in putting some questions to him, lie proved so sharp at figures that the Professor took him aloDg as a servant, lie waa waiter and boy of all work. But ho developed such giftl aud graces that he was put to his books, aud be, .came a cadet, and stood second to noue, until an unfortunate Christmas soiree ..delivered him from the thrall of West Point, and sent him to fiuish his career in the great academy of the world. I found him, in 1827, teaching mathe matics at Mount Pleasant Classical In stitute, Amherst, Mass. He taught me to couquer in studying. There is a vcry hour in which young nature, tug ging, discouraged and weary with books, 'rises ''with the consciousness of victo rious power into masterhoad. Forever after he kuows that he can learn any thing if he pleases. It is a distinct intellectual ''don version." 7 I first went to the blackboard, unccr tao, soft, full of whimpering. "That lesson must be learned," he .said, in a very quiet tone, but with a .terrible intensity, and with the certain ,ty of fate. And explanations and ex cuses he trod .under foot with utter Bcornfullncss. '"I want that problem ; I don't want and reasons why I dou't get it." J "I did study it two hours." 'That's nothing to me I want the lesson. You need not study it at all, .or you may study it ten hours just to jsuit yourself. 1 want the lesion. Un derwood, go to the blackboard." m 'Oh, yes, but U ml r wood got some body to show him his lesson." 'Wnat do I care how you get it ? That's your business. 3ut you must have it." It was tough for a green boy, but it seasoned him. In less than a month I had the most intense sense of intellect ual independence and courage to de fend my recitations. In the midst of a lesson, his cbjd and calm voice would fall upon me in the midst of a demonstration 'No !" I hesitated, stopped, and then went back to the beginning; and on reach ing the same spot again "No!" uN tered with the tone of perfect convic tionvbarred my progress. "The next I" and I sat down in red confusion. He, toOi, was stopped with "No!" but he went right on, finished, and, as he sat down, wa3 rewarded with "Very well." "Why," whipered I, " recited it just as he did, and you said "No!" "Why didn't you say yes and stick to it? It is not enough to know your lesson. You must know that you know it! You have learned nothing till you are sure. If all the world says no, your business is to say yes, and prove it." The foregoing contains a lesson well worthy of study and consideration by all who are engaged in the instruction of the youth. A mere parrot like reci tation of the lesson given to be learned ii too often accepted by the teacher in lieu of a thorough knowledge and un derstanding of it by the pupil. Such surface learning will always prove a stumbling, block to the advancement of the scholar, and will create a habit of superficial thought fatal to the full de velopment of his-mental powers. As the writer says, "It is not enough to know your lesson, iou must know tnat you Know it. aims Knowledge can only be attained by thoroughness on the part alike of teacher and pupil, and it will depend upon the teacher whether or not the pupil shall ac quire that thoroughness, so essential in the acquisition cf knowledge and the formation of a well educated mind. It is found by experiments recently made by Prussian military authorities ' that a sheet of ice three inches thick affords a perfectly safe passage for in fantry or horses marching in single file, and for light carriages; with a thick ness of six inches it will bear all sorts of wa'gons and cannon. The strength of the ice may bo increased by cover ing it with straw and laying planks un der the wagon wheels. The last nam ed precaution is to bo recommended with heavy vehicles, even when the ice is six inches thick. All jerking and irregular motion is to be avoided, as it .serves to make the ice dangerous. A few winters ago, ten or twelve young people, joining hands in an extended line, attempted to cross a pond at a smart trot, keeping step as they went. A few minutes and the ice began to os c Hate, a"c rash followed, and the major ity of tho party got an improvised cold bath! -The 'ice was found in this case to be only two inches thick, but it would probably have resisted a regular aud steady movement somewhat lunger. Itwasaskcd by a scholar, why Master Thomas Hawkins did not marry Miss Ulagrovc, he was answered, ;he could uot master her, so he missed her." ; A gentleman asked, a friend in a very (knowing manner, "Prey did you ever see a cat-fish No, " was the re sponse, "but Iv'e seen a rope walk." A notorious miser having heard a very elegant charity sermon, exclaimed, "This sermon strongly proves the ne cessity of alms. I have almost a mind to turn beggar." "Pay mo that five dollars you owe me, Mr. Malroouey," said a country at torney. "For what?" " For the opin ion you had of me. "Laith, 1 never had any opinion of you iu all my life. A mother, admonishing her son (a lad about seven years of age), told him he should never defer till to morrow what he could do to-day. The little urchin replied, "Then mother, let's eat the remainder of the puddiug to night." A young man met a rival who was somewhat advanced iu years, and wish ing to annoy him, inquired how old he was? " I can't exactly tell," replied the other; "but I can inform you that an ass is older at twenty, thau a man at six ty?" A facetious fellow having unwitting ly offended a conceited puppy, the lat ter told him he was no "geutleman."Are you a gentleman?" asked the droll one. Yes.sir," answer I the fop. " Then, I am very other. giad I am not," replied the Two Oxonians dining toother one of them noticing a spot of grease on the neck-cloth of his companion said," I see you are a Grecian." Pooh !" said the other, "that is far-fetched."" No, in deed," said the punster," I made it on the spot." An old gentleman accused his ser vant ot having stolen his stick. The man protested perfect innocence. "Why, you know," rejoined his master, " that the stick could never walked off with itself." "Certainly uot, sir, unless it was a walking stick."
