One political crisis in the historv of this Government passed when U. S Grant was elected President. Before that all was uncertainty. Loyal men feared that tie success of any partv, bat the alepublicnn, woiald undo whut had been gained by the result oC the war, and that, instead of having one peaceful and prosperous whole,, the na tion would he cursed with sectional bickerings and strife. But when Mr. Grant .took Jis scat the seosible por tion of jour people recognized the fact that the danger was passed. This genseof security crated not alone with, llepubllcans, but also with Democrats,1 however much they mny mutter. Our opponents Licw they would receive naught but wbit wa? just and right The republican plan of reconstruc tion has been faithfully executed, and experience i roves it to ha good. The Southern .States arc having a season of prosperity unknown to tho times when odc continual suap of the slave whip and cry of anguish was heard over the breadth of fourteen States. Manufac tures oall kinds, fustcrcd by tho forc ed high protective tariff incident to the war, have become so well establish ed that they can begin to compete with thos;? of foreign countries. Internal improvements have been made that in sure us a rank in commercial imnort .oncp second to pone, and by the wise financial policy of Grant's Administra tion our rnopicd interests have been so improved that time alone is required to make tho two columns on our ledger aceouot balance. Sinco the war closed, Congress, by its acts of economy, has been able to materially reduced the taxes, and we can, with conndonccr predict that by another year the Democratic cry of "burdensome taxes" will be among the things. of tho past. Long before the expiration of Grant's term of office the revenue of the Government will be raised entirely from the duties on im ports, as was the case before the war. The people know this and hence Jhey coolly go about their business un til the day of election, and then rjuiet ly go to the pells and return Hopubli can officers, that this state of security may be contincd. 4 Y$ are very ha pp to inform our readers that the Hefublican is a suc cess, and should it continro to receive in the future, that support which il now has; it wjll continue to bo a fixed fact Voters cf Polk ! When the control of the county a f airs was in tho aands of tho liepubli- fan party, the continual cry of the Jojvpcrhcad party was that the taxes were too high, and that when they got into power tho taxes shonld be lower-" cd. They elected about one-.half their Wf ticket in j'GG, and their entire ticket in raised for county purposes has Lecn steadily increasing, and ''to-day the county is bankrupt. Republicans were often charged with malfeasance in cfFu 2, and yet, with a Clerk and SheritT of their own party fur four years, and all tho county of ficers except .ludgo in sympathy with them for two years, not a sing'c charge f ofEcial corruption has been proved. How can honest l)emocrats(?) have any confidence in leaders who thus ma liciously! charge tbeir opponents with malfeasance in office, but, as soon as an election has passed over, cease long er to make their charges, for the very reason that t'hey know they were fahe when Uitide. We call upon all honest men in tbe oppos'tioa ranks to calmly cooa'dc the situation, and then say if the affa'rs ol i their county have been any more hon estly or judicious'y r'anaged under t lie M Democratic than they were under Re publican administration. i Not a C ifiiida. c. Senator Xesmith desires that wo should correct the statement made last week, that he is a candidate for Cov- crnor. can 3 id a1 Wee Nes. "protests flgaicst being a e for any office." :rtainly do rot desire to "thrust to iJau. Kx-Senator "an unde upon t served skwell a-n undesired honor,' as ho terras it. As to its being an "undesired honor," we only.havc the Senator's word, but certainly all par tics will concur that it would ho an undeserved horoK" Wc'will refrain from intimalinithat the Kx Senator is 4 -l r i . i a cnnujiaate ior re-ciccuon, nut we uo believe ed" an that it would be as "undeserv honor as the nomination f r Governor. A'c presume, however, that in case that the Kx Senator should be tendered either of the above offices at Albanyj he "would h.e willing to serve the dcat people." His kind of chron ic politicians always take just such a dodge. It is amazing to see with what avid- ty Dotnocrats lay hold of error and continue to place the matter be Tore their readers, calling it truth even when its falsity has repeatedly been demonstrated. A case in point is the economical speech of Daws, of Massa chusetts. That gentleman had no soon er told ol his discovery of exorbitant appropriation estimates, before a dozen membcjks laid bare the falac'cs of ais arguments arid pruved that tho.se esti mates iwerc even less thau Mr. Daws claimed they should be. Yet, notwith standing this vindication of the economy of executive officers, the opposition press continues to suote the wild 'G 'Ur in: of tho Massachusetts Reptesenta tivc, but never a word from the reply of Butler. Mr. Daws himself was convinced of his error, and hss not seen proper to reply to his colleague, Butler. IIoI Bound ioi Salt River Many :of the most influential and hon est men of tho Democratic party, in Polk, have already expressed their con victioos that the county will go Repub lican, land, as a coesccpicnce, none but the "small fry" aspire to receive aparty jotnyiatlori. The nominees start up Salt River to-day. Those having friends aboard would do well to see them at an early hour, as tho grief stricken creatures will need all the con solation their friends can bestow. From all parts of the State we re eclve tho cheerinsr intelligence that tho Republicans are wide awake, and sarp guine; of success at tho coming election Let every man in the party throw aside personal prejudices and preferences, and victory is just as certain to perch upon our banners oq tho evening of the first Monday in June, as that day comc3. ; A color difficult to see Blind man's buff, j Political Note?. Tho "Evening Call justly thinks that tho Republican party has a continued besides, by the triumph of the Demo cratic party our policy of internal in' provcuicnts would be ignored and the Pacific States rotardecMbr a century to come." ; Senator Morton made a speech at the recent Republican State Conven tion of Indiana, in which he showed that the financial administration of the Republican party, both State and Na tional, was producing the happiest re sults. Under Republican management the debt of Ind'ana has been reduced from S13,000,00U to 82,100,0UM while ;n the national fiuances better results have beca obtained than the most ban gu'pc had hoped for. During tho first scrcn months of Grant's administration expenses were S")5,139,f8l 40 less than in tho pre ccc'ling clcvcrt n'onths r'ndrr Johnson, which, (with increased nvc'rits, which resulted from the change,) showed a diif. rencc in Grant's favor of Si,SM, U"5 15. liccause uf this large increase in rcccpts and reduction ot expenses, Congress v.uuld bo able to largely re duce taxes. The late George I'eabody, though he gave a ay millions, was exceedingly c'oso in all matters of personal expendi ture. When in Portland, Me., ho inva riably hired an old rattletrap hack.and the driver charged fifteen cents irstcd of tweotyrfivc.
