I ! -.' - 4 I ."5 ' v ! 'V"? ," " " ( m ' j- L i- """"" THE INDEPENDENT. THURSDAY. .JUNE 7, 1888 Who said our . ticket eonltl not Sliute a commissioner? Our clerk Hughes to the line no matter where the chips fall. If wo had defeated Paulsen, we coulcl not have elected all, son. The noblest work of a people is the election of a republican ticket. Pope. If there had been Mead in my po litical dough, -verily the name of your sheriff would not have been Dennis F. M. DermU. One cause of our success in the legislative ticket is owing fo the fact that we instilled Moore enthu siasm than could our opponents. Cleveland has been renominated for president by the democratic con vention now in session at St. Louis. Thurman was nominated for vice president to-day. A powerful effort was made by our democratic friends to capture the office of county clerk, but so firmly stood republican voters that the majority could not be "NVeatberred. The Oregon senate will hare but one Tongue, and that Tongue will emanate in a strong voice from Washington county. Our county will be represented in the senate. Victory perches on our banner. The entire republican'ticket is elect ed in this county, and the republi can gains in the state strike republi cans and democrats alike with won der. Hermann's majority two years ago was 1035. The returns are near ly all in and indicate a majority of more than 7000. The democrats are nonplused and there is great re joicing in the republican camp. Mr. Weatherred has just cause to feel proud of the vote given him by our people. Although he is defeat ed, such defeat cannot but have pleasant memory in tbe knowledge of high esteem evidenced for him by the citizens of this county. While we feel elated at the result, yet we have no desire to make merry over the unfortunate candidates. Many of them are our warm personal f rienuS; . The Oregon!! never "gets left." Humphrey, compositor in that , ofio. irwi cfjfijtXt5 to represen uMMWJftf ifuT JuKJUf alio ticket.' fn one column it was shown that the entire republican ticket was elected in Multnomah county by about 3000 majority. Humphrey received 2827 votes to his competitors over 5000. fn the table of full returns, some compositor through mistake or on purpose, transposed a figure, bring ing his vote up to 8227. Humphrey will '-harmonize" this vote. A gentleman lately arrived from Han Diego warns all from going there. He says that within the last three months more than ten thou sand people have left there, and many more who want to leave are without the means to get away. Everything in business line is dull. Attachments daily close out trades men and shops. There is no work for mechanics and laborers. Prop erty is falling very low in value. Climate is not food. Booming has 1 bursted. The inflation process has ceased nene can raise the wind. A contemptible trick was played upon iMr. It. Cave last Monday. In times gone by, Mr. Care has been a dissenter, but tbis election, worked squarely with the republicans. To bring him into contempt and cast doubt as to his political position, certain democrats placed his name upon their ticket for justice of the peace, without his knowledge or consent, and persisted in "working" for him. Mr. Cave protested and grew justly indignant at such action, but all to no purpose. But in spite of all their efforts, he would still Riley around the grand old flag, be neath which floated the republican ticket. Mr. Tongue's canvass greatly strengthened the republican ticket in this county. A fight of the most bitter nature was waged against both Mr. Tongue and Mr. Hughe?. At Forest Grove and Hillsboro whole tickets and three to one were freely offered for a vote for Mr. Weather red, nominee for county clerk on the democratic ticket. Mr. Hughes pulled through, with only seven majority votes to his credit, which is wondeif ul considering the "trade" raging throughout the precincts. Mr. Tongue comes to the front with a handsome majority and a well- earned reputation as a leading ora tor of the state. The people of Washington county have elected a splendid ticket, and we hope no act of any man thereon will ever cause he people to regret a single choice j Year by year there is a steady and heavy gain in the population of th State. This is apparent in the vote cast at its successive general elec tions. In June, 1886, the total vote was 54,954. It will now exceed 00, 000. Multnomah county alone in creases her vote about 1500 in two years. It is apparent that through out the state the increasing vote is proportionately republican. In 1880 the total vote of Oregon was 40,810. The census of that year made the population 174,708. The same ratio would indicate a present population of 254,000; but as the number of families, in proportion to voters, ia steadily increasing, we judge the population of Oregon may now be 275,000. 'Ihe case in which the question of the validity of the woman suffrage law came before Judge Nash at Spokane Falls, waa that of Nevada M. Bloomer vs. John Todd, J. . Gaudy and II. E. Clark, election ludires. to recover damages for re fusing her vote at the election. The case will in all probability be ap pealed to the supreme court, and be decided by that court in special ses sion at Walla Walla in July. We are not a lawyer, but will stake our reputation as a lawyer that the de cision of Judge Nash will be con firmed. We will also stake our reputation as a lawyer that it is not in the power of the legislative as sembly of this or any other terri tory in the United states to pass a woman suffrage law that will stand. Wnilibirj 'Jlmr. Swift followed the Irish rescript bringing mourning and terror to the democratic house, which was build ed well but not wisely upon wool, andfrarued of dissolving sugar; and when the .storms of indignation Bwept down upon it, lo it fell. Alas for human ambition. There is wool on the smoky moon and gnashing of teeth upon the lonely Salt river. A jolly band crossed the Rubicon, but the sounds of revelry by night have died away in groans wafted from the Slough of Despond. A perfect town is the one in which you see farmers patronizing the home merchants and the merchants advertising in the home paper, the laborers spending the money they earn with their own tradesmen, and all animated by a spirit that will not purchase articles abroad if they can be bought at home. The spirit of reciprocity between business men and merchants, tradesmen and laborers, farmers and manufacturers, result every time in making a town a perfect one to do business in. In thirtWiir:, t the fifty-two counties oi vmuoriiia, mere are total of 4D97 pernons engaged in grape cultivation. Of these, many include wine-making with it; some make raisins from their grapes; a very few raise grapes only for table use. Los Angeles leads the roll with 921 vineyardists. Sonoma is second with C18; Napa ,tlurd, 508; Santa Clara, fourth, 494. San Be nito has only two in the industry. "Now for Gresham, .St. Paul Vitmrer J'n'. says the ' It is far from improbable that Mr. Blaine, in writing his final declination, virtually nominated Gresham to the presi dency. The canvass of the friends of the gallant soldier, the capable administrator, the upright judge and the honorable citizen, who ia so prominent in the public mind and thought to-day, will now go forward with new vigor to Jt destined i triumph." People all over the country are asking what in the matter with the mails, and the universal conundrum is answered by an exchange, which says the postal department is run by incompetent official all the way down from the postmaftrr general to tbe postmaster in Arkansas, who waited until the mail ba nt his of fice was full before be sent it, awav.
