THE INDEPENDENT. THURSDAY MAY 17. 1883 GOLDESDALE IX ASHES. Loss Two Hundred Thousand Every Store, tbe Conrthn3e, Two t hnrches and Twv Newspaper Offices Burned. Insurance LlUt Many Families Homeless. Ijftfit Sunday afternoon, about 2 o'clock, fire broke out in Win. Dixon's livery stable, on Main street, in Goldentlaje, AV. T. It spread to building east and west, crossed the Htreet, and destroyed every building in a district two and a half blocks wide and three and one-half blocks long. All the buildings were frame. The telegraph office was destroyed and the first news of the disaster reached Portland through Mr. Sig Sichel, the leading merchant of Golden dale, and the heaviest loser by the fire. lie arrived in Portland 3Ionday morning, and reported the following particulars to the Ore gonian: While standing in front of his store at the time mentioned, he dis covered flames issuing from the roof of Dixon's stable opposite, and sounded an alarm. He and a few others ran out the Look and ladder truck. It happened that nearly all the young men in town had gone t a' basket meeting and baptismal service at Golden's mill, eight miles distant, and there were not to exceed fifty. men, young and old, left to l Ama lrlian tliar lirnl'A nut ! tlUUIl I 41 UUUACa UlU V : All hands laid hose and manned the two force pumps, which, uafortnn-j ately were so close to the stable that the heat was unbearable and the work had to be abandoned. An at tempt was then made to tear the stable down, but the flames drove the wimnff volunteers away. t A light breeze was blowing when the fire broke out, but as the flames gained headway the wind naturally increased and in less than an hour there seemed to be a gale blowing j from every point of the compass. The flames spread first to tho A. P. Ilotaling company's building, and then swept up and down the north side of Main street. It then crossed to the south side of Main street, at tacking Sichel's and Cumniings & Cram stores and Iless's dwelling back of the stores, and swept up and down the south side, crossing to the court house and the Presbyterian church. The fire lasted four hours. When it was apparent that the flames could not be stopped until their food was exhausted, thete was a scramble to save effects. A large open space in tbe west part of totvn offered m tuife place to deposit rescued personal j . A .. -nt property, lurniture m the lower, siories of many dwelling was saved. Farmem in the neighborhood seeing tho flames, hurried to render assist ance, and did good service with their teams. Several men and women .fainted from overwork, exhaustion nnrl nTpitmnpnt and there waa some 7 - V..'n1 miATAnnrv TliA nil VQlKl'ftna could do little good, as all the drug stores with their contents were de stroyed. A can of whisky was found and this was an excellent substitute, and under the circumstances was almost a godsend. It is not known whether the county records are damaged or not. There were three safes in the court house; one in the auditor's, one in the treasurer's and one in the probate judge's office, also a vault in the auditor's office. The probabilities are that tho records are not destroyed or damaged beyond restoration. The treasurer had a quantity of gold and greenbacks in his safe what amount he could not state. INSCRANCK. Mr. Sichel could give only a few figures on insurance. He carried policies to the amount of $15,000; Cummings & Cram, $17,000; J. W. Hess & Co.. $1000. Tho total in surance will probably not exceed $50,000. The Lnsk Failure. Sas Francisco, May 13. The J. Lusk Canning company, which assigned last night owing to tho failure of Wm. T. Coleman & Co., is the largest institution of its Lindj in the world. Its affairs are bo j entangled by contracts that it isj impossible to distinguish between! the liabilities and assets. The coin-! pany has large contracts to furnish j canned goods during the present! season to firms m the East and in j Europe. On the other hand, thoy j have contracts with farmers all over! the state to buy the crop this year, j Some of these contracts are of five i years' standing. Nearly the whole j ... i- ...!..ni nmr nt' tllta Vl'lir i;aiiioniiu apuvvt . j has been coutracted for. It is' estimated that thi crop alone inj worth from 40,000 to r,0,00 net; profit to the company. The peach I crop has also been almost exclusively purchased.
