, THE INDEPENDENT. rABgglsa Serial ggaraBsa if A FATAL MISTAKE. O Tire Clere7iZiOho) Tres, of February 23d, 18:5, pub lished an account of a fatal surgical operation which caused a great commotion among med ical men throughout the whole country, Dr. Thayer, the most eminent surgeon in Cleveland, pronouncing it scandalous. It appears that a Mrs. King had Leen suffering for many years from some disease of the stom ach, which h.uj resisted the treatment of all the physicians in attendance. The disease commenced with a slight de rancremint of the digestion, with a poor appetite, followed by a peculiar indescribable dis tress in the s-tomaeh, a feeling that ha been descried as a faint "all gone" sensation, a sticky slime collecting' about the teeth, causing a disagree able taste. This sensation was not removed by food, but, on the contrary, it was increased. After a while the hands and feet became cold and sticky a cold inspiration. There was a constant tired and lan guid feeling. Then followed a dreadful nervousness, with gloomy forebodings. Finally the patient was unable to re tain any food whatever, anil there was constant pain in the aldomen. All prescriln'd rem edies failing to give relief, a consultation was held, when it was decided that the patient had a cancer in the stomach, and in order tosave the patient's life an operation was justifi able. Accordingly, on the 2lM of February, 1 the opera tion was performed by Dr. Vance in the presence of Dr. Tuckerman, Dr. Perrier, Dr. Arms, Dr. Gordon, Dr. Capner, and Dr. Ilalliwell of the Police Board. The operation consist ed in laying open the cavity of the abdomen and exposing the stomach and lovels. When this had been done an examin ation of the orgttns was made, but to the horror and dismay of the doctors there was no cancer to be found. The pa tient did not have a cancer. "When too late the medical men discovered that they had made a terrible mistake; but they sewed the parts together and dressed the wound that they had made, but the poor woman sank from exhaustion and died in a few hours. How sad it must be for the husband of this !oor woman to know that his wife died from the effects of a fcurgieal operation that ought ! never to have been performed. If this woman had taken the proper remedy for Dyspejrsia und Nervous Prostration (for this was what the disease really Wat, she would have been Iiv-ingto-dav. Shaker Extract of JlooTs, or SEIOKld Cl'KATlVK Svnue, a remedy made ex pressly for Dyspepsia or Indi gestion, has restored many such cases to perfect health after all other kinds of treatment have failed. The evidence of its clueaey in curing this class of cf.ses is too voluminous to be published here; hut those who read the published evidence in favor of this dyspeptic remedy do not question its convincing i.atm-f, and the article has au txtensive said. China. A country where tbe roses have no fragrance, and tbe women bave no petticoats; where tbe laborer bas no Sabbath, and tbe magistrate no sense of honor; where the roads bear no vehicles, and tbe ships no keels; where old men flj kites; where tbe needle points to tbe south, ' and tbe sign of being puzzled is to scratch tbe antipodes of tbe bead; where the place of honor is on tbe left band, and tbe seat of intellect is in tbe I stomach; where to take oft your bat is an insolent gesture, and to wear white garments is to put yourself in mourning; which bas a literature without an alphabet, and a language without a grammar. Kx. Changed l!rr Mind. There was to bave born a fMinT r in higb life nt Tetam.'tli, Ncbrnskn. last Sunday. Mr. (ibris. lVteison, ; a wealtby grass widower, ngetl (i'2, j was to bo tbe groom and Miss Kelliub Harris, a verv pretty girl of 111, the bride. 3ut after tbe comjviny bnd artsembled and she anil the old gentleman were ntanding up before tbe minister, and wben she a asked if she would take Lira for her husband, she dropped b'a band aud burstiug into tears, said '-. 1 won't." Sbe then ran upstairs to her own room. Tbe old man left and tbe -company dispersed in FREE TRADE AND WOOL. The Irish World. Free traders claim to be the j special friends of tbe farmers and wool growers and insist ihat they are Veing robbed bj tbe present tariff.X. But let tbe reader give tbe following facts a few minutes' at- tention atid try to hgure out where j the alleged friendship cornea in. ' Under the present tariff 107,J10,.4U pounds of wool at a cost of $13, 71)4,213 were imtorted in 1SHC. All over the country flock-masters were demanding an advance in duties to the ecale of 1867, claiming that great injury has been done their industry by - reductions in duties since then. As a proof that their complaints are well founded we submit these figures: In 1884 there were 50,R2G,G2G sheep in tbe United States. The tariff reduction of 18K3 then began to take effect and in 1S87 tbe number declined to 44,759,314, a clear loss to the business of 5,867, 312 sheep, which, at $2 per bead, would be an actual reduction of $1 1,734,624 The figures are from! statistics published by Cleveland's own statistical bureau. Now wool is to be placed on tbe free list. As it is well known that labor wages are the main cost in producing wool how is it possible for Americans to compete with such wages as tbe under quoted? In tbe Argentine Republic there are lOO.COO.OOO sheep and the herders are paid (3 per month, while in Montana the monthly wages of herders are f 40 per month. The free trader coiupb with his freight argument. Ho will s:it that ' J the Argentine Kepublie is away down near Cape Horn and that 1 . Montana and the rest of the west is here at home, and, therefore, the connaen. e, issause nae o.ar.i Bwu , . , . L, ,, . , ! things of it everywhere, and its name is freight on South American wool a j,,laIJUlt,.e t,.,t it first class in every ought to he sufficient protection, j particular. This is on a par with all other free ' trade theories. It won't stand the!' test of facts, which arc: Freight! $2 per 100 pounds. So our wool- growers are expected to pay 1,200 per cent higher wages and 00 per cent higher freight than tho sheep raisers of tbe above republic and compete with them. It would be superfluous to add a word of argument to this. It simnlv means o me ruin oi our great wool-growing interest and placing ourselves absolutely at the mercv of foreigners. j , A newspaper writer in Xewla ! says that he once heard John ! Mackev sav when a htnke was ' " i threiitened in ViriniA fit v: "I am SOrry that thft.e moil Who nre re- ,7 ceiving ?4 a day do not save more of t? their money. Disraeli made himself a famous author and Edwin Arnold wrote bis "Light of Asia." "Yes, but they were men of genius." "True; the genius of hard work. I will cite another case of which I have personal knowledger,5ome years ago I knew a bright young man named Leslie Sulgrove. Ife was a postoffice clerk in Indianapolis, Ind. He simply in turn devoted half an hour a day to each subject. He kept this up unremit tingly for five years, and finally attained such a degree of proficiency in each that be might almost have been called a master. Tbe secret of his success was bard work.
