THE INDEPENDENT. THURSDAY. ...MARCH 21,1H88 knocked Dunn by ti Sparrow. i Omaha, March 2G. Barton M. Mills, a traveling salesman of Lynn, Mass. , met with a peculiar and pain ful accident this morning at the Burlington depot. Mr. Mills alighted from o carriage at the entrance, and proceeded to walk around the depot to go to the baggage room. Just as he reached the southwest corner bomething struck him fairly in the eye and knocked him down. The causo of the mishap was an English sparrow. The bill of the bird penetrated the eyeball, and the unfortunate man will lose hi9 eye. Tljc bird was picked up dead, and one of its eyes was closed as the result of a fight with another spar row. which was in prdsres when Mr. Mills was struck. HOW DO WE DI6 OUR GRAVES? Mounier suggests the following tny Hm ftrnrl iatinn of femS. ! m . which has succeeded in his case. Lucern has a voracious appetite for potash, and so has the fern. He i i i,,. ;.,fQfQ,i anil wwmiuciuuau. "" " and found it so aispuiea me pinaau with the fern, that the latter dwindled and died out. New Zea land could well try the experiment. And we add, why not Oregon? It is only too well known by farmers throughout the state that there are large tracts of otherwise fertile land that do not yield one-half what they might, if rid of the fern pest. And when we consider the fact that lucern is also a valuable forage plant, and an excellent subsoiler, its deep-running roots bringing to the surface large ijuantitiea of fertilizing material, not otherwise obtainable; it would seem to admirably supply a long-felt want. It is extensively and profitably cultivated ia Europe and parts of our own country, and farniers of I'olk county and other parts of the state would evidently forward their own interests by bringing it into more general use here. Traveleia :" have pone "far countries for to see" Hay that they find human na ture pretty much tlie name all the world aver. They find wide variance in color of skin. in physical contour, in mental cliaract sristici", but in the essential elements that control foci a I conduct, the human family is a brotherhood. Th law, unwritten, found in no stat ute book, enforced by no court decrees, but having an influence circumscribed only by the limit of earthly space, is the law of kinilnens. Among peoples where cruelty to human kind is almost a fixed liat.it, who are re lentless foes, and a friends scarcely less to be dreaded, whose savage natures revel in fiendish atrocities, there yet lingers the spark of divinity which lifts man above the Iteasts. Sorrow melts the human heart wher ever found, and sympathy mingles its tears w:t,U grief all the world over. Where pity does not dwell, there lives no thing of human kind. It-is "the touch i irf nature that makes th whole world kin." What a terrible world this would be to live in were it not lor the sympathy and loving kindness ahown us when t-orruw comes, for it is decreed that in alt lives "some days must bo dark and dreary." The 10,000 and more voluntary testi monials the proprietors of Warner's sate cure have received in regard to the etticacy of that remedy, reveal ''this touch of nature" in a iieculiar manner. The great majority of them acknowledge that it was through some kind friend who, in pity for their sufiering, bad made known to them the wonderful merits of this great remedy. The testimonials of C'apt. Geo. B. Wilt bank of Philadelphia, is a fair f ample. He was put ashore from bis ship to die of a fever resulting from kid ney and liver trouble, and a physicians could not help him, there seemed no hope for him. but be says "A friend of mine, w ho hapx'i:el into port, ea me to see me. and urged me to begin the use of Warner's sale cure." lie liegan to use it as his friend advised, and was cured in a very short time.
