THE INDEPENDENT. THURSDAY . ..MARCH 1. 1S89 nn i A FATAL MISTAKE. The Cleveland (Ohio) Press of February 23d, 188:5, pub lislied an account of a fatal eurgical operation which caused a great commotion among med ical men throughout the whole country, Dr. Thayer, the most eminent surgeon in Cleveland, pronouncing it scandalous. It appears that a Mrs. King had been suffering for many years from some disease of the stom ach, which had resisted the treatment of all the physicians in attendance. The disease commenced with a slight de rangement of the digestion, "With a poor apjetite, followed by a peculiar indescribable dis tress in the stom.uli, a feeling that has been described as a faint "all gone' sensation, a sticky slime collecting about the teeth, causing a 'disagree able taste. This sensation was not removed by food, but, on the contrary, it was increased. After a while the hands and feet became cold and sticky a cold perspiration. There was a constant tired and lan guid feeling. Then followed a dreadful nervousness, with gloomy forebodings. Finally the patient was unable to re tain any food whatever, and there was constant pain in the alnlomen. All prescribed rem edies failing to give relief, a consultation was held, when it was decided that the patient had a cancer in the stomach, and in order to save the patient's life an ojeration was justifi able. Accordingly, on the 2'2d of February, 1883, the opera tion was performed by Dr. Vance in the presence of Dr. Tuckerman, Dr. l'errier, Dr. Anns, Dr. Gordon. Dr. C'apner, and Dr. Halliwellof the Police Board. The operation consist ed in laying open the cavity Of the abUom-n ami t-xuv ; iue sxomacu aim fxv'W. urn this had been done an examin ation of the organ- vas made, but to the horror ami dismay of the doctors there -was no cancer to be found. The pa tient did not have a eaneer. When too late the medical men discovered that they had made a terrible mistake; but they se"we4 the parts together and dressed the wound that they had made, but the poor woman sank from exhaustion and died in a few hours. How sad it must be for the husband of this poor woman to know that his wife died from the effects of a surgical operation th:t ought never to have been erformed. If this woman had taken the proper remedy for Dyspepsia and Nervous Prostration (tor this waa what the disease really was), she would have been liv ing to-day. Shaker' Extract or Roots, or Seicel's Curative Syrup, a remedy made ex pressly for Dyspepsia or Indi gestion, has ivstcivd many such cases to perfect health after all other kin.! of treatment have failed. The evidence of its efficacy in curing this class of cases is too voluminous to be published here; but those who read the published evidence in favor of this dyspeptic remedy do not question its convincing nature, and tho article has an fcs tensive sale. A Kelie or Slurerj. A curious suit has been commenced at Memphis, having its origin in the dim distance of "befoh the war" period. A white citizen of Memphis had a free mulatto woman with whom he lived as husband, not being I legally competent to intermarry with j her, and from the union sprang three 1-11 TT -J.l -A ll-I cuuuren. rie leit, uome to seeK uis fortune in California and was not heard of for some time. The brevet wife died and the brother of tbe father took the children to his home. This man entered into a conspiracy with certain parties, and under the pretense of taking the little ones ' away to school they were ppiiited south and sold as slaves. One of the little enes, Moses Hummer, wast so young that he had a very slight recollection of his earlier ex periences and hardly remembered that he had ever been free. lie j .served his master faithfully and was trusted as the manager of several farms, and stock to him nntil freed at the close of the war. By some accident he, after many years, met and was recognized by tbe older brother, and they were -both found by their father who had been searching long for them after his return from California. The father and sons endeavored to get lUiiuimiuii on the track of the rascals who kid napped them, but could not find sufficient proof. The father and elder brother died not long since, but Moses survived and kept on the j the trail, lie finally succeeded in finding the original bill oi sale, the signatures to which revealed the child stealers. They are both dead, but one of them has left a large estate and Moses has commenced suit to recover damages for the in jury and pay for his twenty or thirty years of hard labor from the heirs ot the estate. It is not outlawed for the reason that the fraudulent con cealment of the criiue has extended down to date and the statute of limitations does not run. A Compressed Air Tale. A good story was told at the recent dinner of the Stylus Club about the narrow escape from death of a well known member of the New York pr9s in St. Andrew's Church this city. The gentleman in question, ! who. by the way, is quite a celebrated organist himself (pipe organ, not hand organ ), was wandering through the organ loft of St. Andrew's Church when he slipped and fell into the diapason pipe of the huge instru ment. He went down feet foremost into the cone of the pipe until he was firmly wedged. The more he struggled the tighter he wedged himself, and, being about twelve feet from the top of the pipe, the air soon began to give out, and he became frightened at the idea of dying in the prison where accident had lodged him. His frantic shouts for help did no good. After spending t night in this dangerou and dismal hole, and having in his struggles stripped oil' his coat, he wound it about his waist, so that no air could escape from l.-d.t.' Cn.-... 1. 1. t. i w"". uv ut-.tiu lUCilUIIUIUUS tones of the organ, and to the welcome and inspiring strains of "Arise, my sou!, arise, Shake off thy guilty fear:" He ascended the pipe until he reached the top with his hands. Then he knew that air had been pumped in below him, and that by gradual compression of the air he bad been forced up as through a pneumatic tube. As he drew himself out of the pipe he gave one hearty and fervent shout "Saved!" which rang above the tones of tbe organ j and nearly frightened the organist ! to death . f As none of the geutlemen who 1110 ret-imi 01 mis suoiime narrative can attest upon their oatli ! UUUboro, Or., Nov 11, 1S3C. nll-tf 'A FRIEND OF MINE." thm law Wbieh rTtelrrlea the Entire Globe. Travelers rbo have pone "far countries i for to see" nay that they find human na- i lure pretty much the same all the world ', oyer. j They find wide variance in color of ekin, in physical contour, in mental charaet- j ?riKti-?, but in the essential elements j that control Stxiai roixiiaf, the human family is a brotherhood. The law, unwritten, found in no stat ute book, enforced by no court decree.-, hut having mi intltienio circumscribed only by the limits of earthly space, is the taw of kindness. Among peoples where c ruelty to human kind is almost a fixed habit, who are re lentless foes, and a friends scarcely less to be dreaded, whose savare natures revel in fiendish atrocities, there yet lingers the spark of divinity which lilts 1 man above the tieasts. i Sorrow melts the human heart wher- i ever found, and sympathy mingles its tears with t?ricf all the world over, i Where pity does not dwell, there lives no j thing of human kind. It is "the touch j irf nature that makes the whole world i kin." j What a terrible world this would be to j live in wete it not lor the sympathy and loving kindness shown us when sorrow i comes, for it is decreed that in all lives j "some days must be dark and dreary." i The 10,O and more voluntary tesli- j menials the proprietors of Warner's sale ; cure have received in regard to the efficacy of that remedy, reveal "this touch of nature" in a 11 uliar manner. The great majority oi them acknow ledge that it was through' some kind friend who, in pity for their suffering, had made known to them the wonderful merits of this preat remedy. The testimonial of Capt. Geo. B. Wiltbank of rhiladelphia, is a fair sample. He was put itshore from hi ship to die of a fever resulting from kid ney and liver trouble, and as physicians could not help It i 111, there seemed no hope for him. But he says "A friend of mine, who hapienel into port, came to see me, and ured me to begin the use of Warner's sate cure." He began to use it as his friend advised, and was cured in a very short time. How many men there are to-day in the world, founding out lives of useful ness, making the world happier and bet ter, who would have long since passed to the other shore, bail it not Ix-en for the loving kindness of friends, shown in this pi at tical way, as these testimonials from all quarters of the g!oln utl'ord ampleevidcnce.
