1'V a "H'.'.v '-" "a" ."S. ' -1 I - THE INDEPENDENT. THURSDAY FEB. 10, 18S8 Vfcat is this Disease that is Coming f. Upon Us? ' lake a thief at night it steals in upon U9 unawares. The pa tients have pains about the chest ami sides, and sometime in the back. They feel dull and sleepy; the mouth has a bad taste, especially in the morning. A sort of sticky slime collects about the teeth. The appetite is poor. There is a feeling like a heavy load on the stomach ; sometimes a faint, all gone sensation at the pit of the stomach which food does not satisfy. The eyes are sunken, the handg and feet become cold and clammy. After a while a cough sets in, at first dry, but after a few months it is attend ed with a greenish-colored ex pectoration. The patient feels tired all the while, and sleep does not seem to afford any rest. After a time he Income nervous, irritable and gloomy, and has evil forebodings. There is ftgiddiness, a sort of whirl ing sensation in the head when rising up suddenly. The low els become costive; the skin is dry and hot at times ; the blood becomes thick and stagnant; the whites of the eyes become tinged with yellow; the urine is scanty and high colored, de positing a sediment after stunt in. There is frequently spitting up of the food, so: tunes with a sour taste u sometimes with a sweetie, taste; this ia frequently at tended with palpitation of the heart; the vision becomes im paired, with spots before tlit eyes; there is a feeling of great prostration and weakness. All of these symptoms are in turn present. It is thought that uearly one-third of our j fil iation has this disease in some of its varied forms. It has leen found that phy sicians have mistaken the cause of this disease. Some have treated it for a liver complaint, others for kidney disease, etc., etc., but none oi these kinds of treatment have been attended with success; for it is really constipation and dysjepsia. It is also found that Shaker Ex tract of Roots, or Mother Sei gel's Curative Syrup, when properly prepared will remove this disease in all its stages. Care must be taken, however, to secure the genuine article. IT WIU. SELL BETTER THAN COTTON". Mr. John C. Hemptinstall, of Chulafirmee, Cleburn Co., Ala., writes: "My wife has been so much benefited by Shaker . Extract of Roots or SeigeFs Syrup that she says she would rather be without part of her food than without the medicine. It has done her more good than the doctors and all other medicines put together. I would ride twenty miles to get it into the hands of any suf ferer if he can get it in no other way. I lelieve it will soon sell in this State better than cotton. TESTIMONY FROM TEXAS. Mrs. S.E. Barton, of Varner, Ripley Co., Mo., writes that she had beenloug afflicted with i i . i uvspepsia ana uisease or tne urinary organs and was cured by Shaker Extract of Roots. Rev. J. J. McGuire, merchant, of the same place, who sold Mrs. Barton the medicine, says he has sold it for four years and never knew it to fail. t SHE WAS ALMOST DEAD I was so low with dyspep sia that there was not a phy sician to be found who could do anything with me. 1 had fluttering of the heart and swimming of the bead. One day I read your pamphlet called "Life Amonq the Shakers" which descriled my disease better than I could myself. I tried the Shaker- Extract of Roots and Kept on with it until to-day I rejoice in good health. Mrs. M. E. Tinsley, Bevier, Muhlenburg Co., Ky. Parker an old citizen of Oregon, who was robbed out of $10,000 and practically beggared, is in San Francisco, under bail for his appearance to serve as witness against the men who robbed him. He has been in prison for a time, for want of bail. He is without means. He went to San Francisco to make due complaint against the three scoundrels who swindled him out of his money. They succeeded in bailing themselves out with the money they got from him, while he languished in prison. The end will be, probably, that he will come out of the case penniless, and they will go unpunished. For allowing him self to be swindled be suffers imprisonment. For having robbed him, the swindlers go clear. This is law, it appears; but wherein is the aualitv of iustice? The lesson of it w is, in San Francisco courts, at all events, when a man is swindled and robbed, the better thing for him to do is to submit and mate no efforts to bring the rascals to justice, in order to escape the similar penally of Parker. Shysters about the courts appear to have the ear of the judges The accuser is made the victim be hind the bars. The accused and guilty go free. It is simply a warn ing for the victim to beware and not pursue the criminal. They can grin at him inside, as they stand outside the prison bars. It is outraged and maladministration of law and justice. News. Oregon Horses in California. San Francisco, Feb. 12 L. B. Lindsey. of Portland, takes great pride io showing his handsome youncf stallion JJeeoration JJav. bo named on account of being foaled on May 30. The colt is 2 years old and a half brother to Jane L, being sired by the same horse, IfambJe tonian Mambrino. In speaking of him Lindsey said: "I consider him the best colt I ever owned, if not the best I have ever seen." He is a beautiful dark bay of grand form and good size, with fine front and great speed. He is entered in the 2-year-old stake of this year. Lindsey is now waiting for the arrival from Oregon of a fi-year old gelding, another Hambletonian Mambrino. He earned a record in Oregon of 2:39. Lindsey also has a fast and promising chestnut gelding named Hamblin. He is a novice, but will be tested this year. Nautilla J. has been sent to Oregon. The mare is not sound enough to warrant preparing her for a hard campaign. Lindsey has traded the chestnut stallion Mt. Vernon, record 2:26, for four 4-year olds. The horse will be taken to Oregon to do service. fflE GREAT REGULATOR PUHZLY UEQZTACLE. Are Ton Bilious 7 Th KOfuttttor sterner failm to enre. Tlie recent exploit of Mr. William Beach, leaves no doubt that he is the handiest ntan in trie worm wiui me seals. The ease with which he outrowed his opponent, the Hupposed invincible Ned Han an. Bhows mat in lorm. irue, and muscular development, adapted to cnlling, lie has no equal. Although an Australian Dy virtue oi residence, Beach was bora in Surrey, England, in 18."1, and removed with his parents to New South Wales in 1354. He was brought up to his father's trade, and, while toiling like a young Vuh an in the smithy, unconsciously developed that magnificent physique which ha eince brought him world-wide distinction. When about twenty-three years of age, Beach commenced rowing on the IUa warra Lakes against local competitors, and from the outset kept winning until gradually handicapped out of all races. Mr. Beach's system of training includes a run of two or three miles before break fast, a walk of nix or Bveii miles after wards, and a pull over the course. After dinner comes another two mile walk and a second pull over the course, during which lie rows himself riht out, eases off, and then pulls a-jain. A long walk concludes the day. A man under such physical strain, even though he be a giant, must often feel the failure of his strength to his will, and. Dowerful tliou'li he lie, it is not surprising that .Mr. Beach candidly states that during his training, previous to meeting Kdward Hanlan the second time for the world's championship, his trainer liought for him Warner's safe cure ami he nays: "I was agreeably astonished at the great lenetit which followed its use." While in training he finds this the best possible aid to a com mand of all his natural powers, liecause it does not first goad and afterwards weaken the system, but acts in ierfect harmony with nature's laws. Mr. Beach's- experience is confirmed by the experience of many thousands of athletes all over the world. I'nder the great plivs'nal t-train they break down and die prematurely, liecause they have not been able to keep dicease away from their kidneys and liver, whence moat diseases originate. Mr. lWach recog nizes this necessity, and lias sagacity enough to use the only scientific iecitic for that purpose. He has not only the prestige oi victory, but the prestige of a true scientific method of training and keeping up his wonderful physical con dition. If lie did not voluntarily give up the championship, it would no doubt lie a long time liefore it was wreated from him. Kxecutoi-M Xotire.
