mm THE INDEPENDENT. FOREST GROVE, September 10. 1*74. ^ leuciti N ow s . The Harvest. The showers of this week stopped work in the harvest field, to the det rim e n t of farmers. There is some w heat aud a great deal of the oat cr<»p unthreshed. If this weather ithould hold through the present week a good deal of grain will be damaged. T. G. Todd, the Gleason brothers, Mr. Alexander aud several fa rm e rs on the south side of Gale’s rreek, on the Tualatin river, aud V\Vapato.lake have laigo fields of wheat standing out, some of it not cut and some in the shock. The ram Sunday night was light and som e began to thresh again Monday evening, but rain came again Mon day and Tuesday nights with cloudy weather during the day time and n o w it would take a day or two of sunshine before work could begin. Mr. Alexander who lives some two miles southwest of the Grove has all of his spring crop in the shock yet. Mr. Todd wanted to thresh it last Sunday but Mr. Alexander desired to wait and we fear now that he will sutler damage. Most all of the wheat crop is threshed however and the loss if auy will be mostly confined to late oats. P rospehois .— The number of stu dents matriculating in the College and Academ y’ s larger than ever be fore at this time of the year. This is particularly cheering when we con sider that harvest is much later this season than common, and that there has been a change in the teachers in the Academy. Professor Robb is quite popular already as a teacher and a citizen, and Miss Robinson is also popular among her pupils and new acquaintances. This year bids fair to be a most prosperous one for both the College and Academy. —• — — B radlxy , M vrsh A Co.—W e copy the following from the Portland Daily (Prptjtmian: In another column app -irs the fall an- nouncem-nt of Brail! y.
