tendered his resignation aa super
intendent of the government In
dian training school at Chemawa,
near this city. . He resigns to re
enter the ministry. Mr. Irwin
was appointed under President
Harrison in August, 1880
The state board 'of equalization
to-day heard VV. W. Branniu,from
Umatilla, N. B. Knight, from
Klamath, J. W. Noble, from
Clackamas and . II. Task from
Malheur. The claim was made
that railroad land should not be
assessed at $2.50 per acre and
wagon road land at $1. To-day
the board was discussing the
assessment of telegraph lines. It
was at first proposed to value the
Western Union at $120 per mile.
It was then moved to make a uni
form rate of $150, and finally' it
1 placed at $200, when the
hoard postponed final action until
Monday. It is assessed always by

table until Monday, but $100 per

Frank Kimmell i a brakemon on
the Fort Wayne railroad. When
making his run on tbe freight last
night lie found a tramp ruling on
ihe bumpers when the train was
near Warsaw. The fellow mutter
ed an oath when Kimmel roughly
told him to get off the train. "Come
and put me off", he growled in re
sponse, Kimmel needed no sec
ond invitation, and going up to
him shoved him ull' the train.
The train was gdlng slowly at the
time and the tramp was not huit.
He picked himself up and thook
his list at Kimmel, The hitter
went about his business and
thought bothing about it. The
tramp,it leemg, boarded Ihe train
as soon ai ivimineire uactc was
turned. He seemed to have mur
der in his heait, for when the
train reached St. Mary's bridge,
which is eixtv feet above the river
be sneaked up behind the brake-
man and shoved him oil the train.
Poor Kiiumel, with an awful cry,

ing fatal injuries. The tramp has
not been arrested, but the ollaiala

followed nowadays by three strange
acting persons whenever he is on

measures for his own personal
safety. The report is also current

Centeral Pacific Railroad Com
pany made the largest timber land
:ile in its history yesterday.
According to the reports of the
ooinpuiy's oliicials the sale
imounted to $100,000. It was
Hatel that the land averaged $8
an ac e, aud this would make the
total acreage sold 12,503, or
twenty square miles.
