Caat of Characters of Ihii Great Cantata to B Fressatd Dtc mber 17 and 18. The greatest Cantata in Ameri can print will le presented to the Albany public in magnificent cos tume on the 17th and 18th of De cember, 18H1. To give a proper description of his superb product ion it would take much more space than we ft el at liberty to ask of our already generous news paper publishers. However, the leople of Albiny will have the opportunity of witnessing a per formance on the above dates long to ri.Iliembere(, and such a one . . .: . , as has not been attempted for ten years. Most every school boy has heard, nt least a part of the story of Beishaz.ar, the dow nfall oi the wonderful city of Babylon, the long oppression of the Jews and their final restoration by Cyrus, king of Persia. Attempts have been made by artists to paint the gorgeous least of Belshazzir on canvas, and to picture this tryant king in his tragical death. Biblical histiry gives us, one of the most striking even's to be found in the whole raiw of bible history in this story of LeUhazza--.- Who has not read of the mysterious hand-writing on t'ie wall, tb attempt of the Magi to read it, their failure, and the cored interpretation of the prophet Daniel. Who has not in their imagination saw the beauti ful and white winged angel appear to Cyrus iu his camp, and listened to the sweet strains of music as tiie angel sings to him. This Cantata so faintly hinted at in the ab ve lints will be placed on the stage in a manner wh.ch is pleasing and interesting. TKX l'Ol.NTliUS. 1. Albany hasdrainauc ability. 2. "Mueller. The Ksceat Bclo Fire, The Scio Press has the fol low ing to say of the burning of the llonring mills, water works and electric light plant at that place last week : "That Scio has received a blow, in .a financial senee, the effects of w h eh will be felt for months to come, goes with out question : The direct damages are variously estimated at from $25,600 to $35,000. The conse quential damages are difficult to estimate but undoubtedly will be as much mnre. The business in terests of Scio are to be a great extent paralyzed. One merchai t w ho had made calculi tion to go io Portland last Monday to purchase a la;ge stock of holiday goods, will not go at all now-, or at least will not lay in any holiday goods to speak of, and what is true with this one is true with all. Goins & Gamber will have flour and feed on hand from Othr sources to supply their customers, but that will not replece the wheat lost. Many farmers keep their wheat for flouring purposes at home (for tunate in this instance, ; this of course will be taken elsewhere, and as a matter of course a part of their produce, etc., and the buying of family supplies will in a meas ure go to other towns. Unques tionably there will be a falling off of trade in all branches of business. People will be compelled to buy less than they otherwise would had the fire not occurred. The loss of tiventy thousand dollars from the circulating medium of the F.i ks of the Sant am will neces sarily a'fect every one more or less. Should a larger and better mill be erected, as is promised within the year, we will in a short time forget our joss in the push and bustle of building. Messrs. !oinsi& Gambei will feel the loss though for years. They have the sympathy of everyone, and we are informed they have had tenders of financial aid that ppeaks very flattering of their business capacity and integrity. A number of our citizens also have expressed themselves as willing to give them financial aid in rebuild ing the mill. While the blow is a heavy one at t'ae prosperity of Scio and vicinity, it will in all probabilty result in better improve ments, better mill, etc., in the future."
