WORLD'S TKere has been ho ii.iiuIi ta'k about Oregon baing or not being represented at the World's Fair that the' subject has become tire some, yet the fact remains that the state must be represented. A progressive state like Oregon can not afford to neule't to hi ve her great industries and resources ex hibited to the world along with the other states, and action to that end should now be prompt and vigorous. It has been delayed too long already. The chief trouble heretofore lias been that the city of Portland went at .he matter backwards. After the legislature failed to perform its duty in the premises and refused to make any appro piiation for this purpose, Portland undertook the task of raiding a fund to give the state a becoming representation and to place Oregoa in her proper place among the progressive l'acitic Coast Stales a the World's Fair; but instead of raising a fund first, rhich would naturally be expected of the wealth and eutennise of the metropolis, the state was first asked to contribute toward such a fund. The first question as-ked was where the matter was pre sented, "What has Portland done?" Xo answer could be given, and the people cf the etate have been waiting to gee what the big consolidated city is oii;g to do about it. Let Portland tnve in the mat ter, and show to the people of the state that her citizens are willing to contribute liberally to a fund for Oregon's representation at the World's Fair, and unless we are both mistaken tho other cities, and the people generally through out the state, will chow their enterprise by contributing their share toward the neceeaarv fund. of underwear say in a recent circular: "My prices for next spring are from 10 to 1" per cent less than heretofore. Why? My increased production of thoae goods allows me to make them at a less expense in manufacture," This is exactly the situation, and just what the new tariff law contem plate 1. Tut it is pwr comfort for the advocates of free trade for partisan pu'popes only. The-Russian government is disposed to push the construction of the Siberian railwav with the" object of affording employment to as many of the famiue-httieken population as pofsi'de. Itisabout as good a way as any to extend relief, and beats the F.nglish pauper system all hollow. But then England is a lais ez faire country, and would regard it as a crime to extend relit! to her po r by promoting productive worts which might interfere with pri vate enterprise. WK HAVE NOT AN ELEPHANT :on our hands; Tils free coinage of silver is not a question that has been shelved, by any means. It will be found to be an active, living issue as soon as congress assembles once more. Tub mining congress of len ver, voiced a popular cry in taking action in favor of silver. Oregon's representatives at the national capitol will soon be at their posts of duty. The home being democratic, the lone repub lican from this state, as well as those from elsewhere, will not figure extensively iu choosing a speaker. For this position there is going to be a warm c-ntebt among the democrats. The principal candidates are still Mills of Texai, Crisp of Georgia, Springer of Illinois, Hatch of Missouri. Mi-Millin of Tennessee, Wilson cf West Vir ginia and Bynutn of Indiana. These probably stand in the order named eu far as their strength at present is concerned. There are other candidates, but they seeni to have entered the race simply to give prominence, to that the speaker, w hoover he may be, shii'j look upon them with favor when he comes to make up his list of J committees. Mills has straliled or hedged on the silver question, which is relieved to give hiin votes among eastern democrats he could liot otherwise obtain. Crisp is Baid to have the assurance of the influence oi Tammany Hall in his canvass. In many quarters ho is regarded as the safest man the democrats coul.I choose is a remarkable able man ami is making a strong canvars. Mills, whom everybody now regards us iu the lead, is impulsive and hot headed and possesses character istics the most remote from tho?e which a speaker should possess. There has bten no talk of a republican nomination. It is an empty honor at the most, but in all probability it will be given by acclamation to ex-Speaker Heed. At any rate he nil! be the republi can leader.
