Aiken ex j hibited a sample of the asbestos found it the mine belonging to I'arton .V Smith, in the Oreen mountain district, southeast of Carll. Although merelv surface mineral it is a very excellent spev.-in-.en. In hornblende deposits the rapid cooling of the surface and disintegration caused by air water and changes of temperature, reduce the mineral to a poor con dition as a rule, but. deeper down, the fiber is found unmixed with free silica, and therefore of a sat isfactory nature, and tit for felting atid spinning. As it is probably the best beat insular used iu the arts, and about the only substance knoAii to science which absolutely ill not burn, the discovery of an extensive deposit of such good ipiality of asbestos as this is not only a source of wealth but a ben efit to the world. Ordi aacc iyJ ktt-r THE BLUE SOCKET MINES- A Big Eicitiment la Haney County Over Tbe: Famed DiggirgJ- The excitement is spreading, and wagon loads of men are com ing into Harney City daily lrom distant localities, eays the Harney Times. The wildest rumors are afloat of great banks of gold dust beim: found. Itiswitn the great est care that the news gathers can separate the true from the false re ports. Ine discoveries are ncn enough without any exaggeration. Oo.d has been found in paying quantities in three gulches on Tiout creek. On the Harney City site rich claims have been located also on Soldier creek, Hatttlesnake, Coffeepot and Cow creek. It is authoritatively stated that the long-lost Blue Bucket mine lias Uen discovered in what is known as the Peter Mortimer can jon, northeast of Harney City. It appears that an old prospector named White has been tracing the old emigrant trail through from Snake river, and found the grave of a woman who died a little over a day's drive from the fin.0119 Blue Bucket gold di-covcry. He has been about six months on the work, and since finding the grave has made diligent search in this way from it. About ten days ago he "put a man on the road to Cali fornia with orders to change horses and make li miles a day. While he himself packed bis things and started a few days laler. The rider told at one of his stopping places that his boss had panned out two ounces of gold from ten cans and hd sent him for friend in California. The parties receiv ing this information at once hastened to Harney City and be gan hunting for the discovery. On Sunday there was a rush for the i'eter Mortimer canyon. Uold was discovered there and it is thought this is a rich mine. Notices were written and pasted on stones and men on horseback road a lace for the first claims. Hill Cattergon, Ike Miller, Bob Copeland and scotty Hayes scat tered their notices down tne c in yon and began prospecting. As expected, the precious metal was found in large quantities, but at this season there h no water to oik the mineJ. (juite another view of the mat ter is expressed in the East Oregon:an by Senator Matlock, w ho is back from a business trip to the Harney country. He was several days at Burns, and says the excitement over the new gold discovery out in tint section, claimed to be the lost ' Blue Bucket Diggings," seems to subside in intensity as one gets nearer the scene, which is usually the case. At Burns he saw several prospect tors returning from the new "Eldorado," who say the golden treasuie is not eo plentiful after all. There is some gold there, but it is all on the bedrock, and there js little or no water to be had for mining. People of Harney and Burns are net so greatly exercised over the discovery as has been imagine 1. A Catorn ef Electricity. Western Fireman: Minneaiti has an electric well near a place called Red Wing. According to the story the drillers had drilled about lot) feet when they lost their drill rods and a diamond drill. The whole business had dropped to nowhere in an instant. There was quite a force ef air omingout of the hole, and the men said there was no use g inz an v fur ther, because there was no bjttom. Thev concluded to fish for the rod and drill, but as soon as the reds were droppel into the hole they began to shiver in a queer way. One of the men took hold of the bar with a pair of leather gloves, but was instantly knocked down. Then another man touched a rope and got a shock, because it was wet. There seems to be a perfect natural store house of electricity. It is generated in pome way in that jocket where the drill went. Letter Llet. Baldwin, an old inn, living at Eugene is missing, ami it is feaied he has committed suicide. There are thirty-one counties in the state, and only eleven, so far, have returned their assessment rolls. A Fort Klamath correspondent says : No l-ss than 13,000 acres of this country will be under irriga ting ditches next spring, and this beautiful land is destined to be a very Eden spot of Oregon. The walnut grove of William Barlow, near Barlow station, is a busy place. Quite aforeeof young people are eng ge l in picking up and selling the nuts. There will be several hundred bushels of nuts of fine quality and larger size than ever grown heretofore. Large quantities are also being shipped away daily in the pod for planting purposes. A national bank with a capital of $50,000, with authority to in crease it to double that amount, is now in process of organization at Hillsboro. Its local in inagers will be J. W. Crider and I). W. Sears, and various others from all over the country will have stock in it. The stock will include both Salem and Portland capital. They will probably commence business about the beginning of the new year. The general guess is that the neat is to be a 'hard w;n"er" in Oregon. At best it is only a guass, and probably the prediction is based largely' on the fact that there was practically no winter last sea son. Other rigns, real or fancied, are mentioned as indications that the approaching winter will be as extreme in severity as the last one was in mildness. "Stockmen in this county," says a Prineville paper, "expect a severe winter and a good deal of it." It w ill be well to prepare for it anyway. Govs To Jail. Wilson White, the roan who was taken to Poitland, Tuesiay, on the charge of cutting timber on government land, in Cheher pre cinct, appeard in the U. S. circuit court in that city, yesterday, plead guilty to the charge, and was fen. teneed to pay a li ne of '0 J, or to be imprisoned in the Lano county jail for the term of thirty days. Not having any money he was compell ed t chot se the lat er penalty. He was brought here last evening by a Deputy I' ni'ed States Marshal, turned over t j Sheriff" Noland, and is now serving out the sentence, says the Eugene Guard. About Hope. Lite county's 1891 co.of hops is near.y all marketed. Last week Smith & Hall shipped ten car load east and the week betore seven car loads. They have shipped this fall -1 car loads.
