It is to be hoped that the effort w ill meet with success. A New Bank. Hon. J. W. Cusick has inr.de all the necessary arrangements for openii g a new bank in this city in the near future. Ttie bank will be ow ned by J. W. Cusick A Co., and will occupy his building where 11. J. Jones' book store now is. A new front will be put in, which will serve as the bank's quarters for the present. Mr. Cusick state that his intention is later on to erect a line brick block occupying the w hole of his property on l-irs: and Hroadalbin street?, with the 1 ank inMhe ccruer. The work of remodelirg the present building will begin next month. Mr. Cusick, it is under.-tood, is backed in the enterprise by I'ortland cap italists. Thinking perhaps a few items from Monmouth might be of in terest to your many icielers, I send you the following: Monmouth is a tow n of about eight hundred inhabitants, it is beautifully situated near the hills of tin Coast Range, two m;le west of the Willamette river, anil is the seat of the Stace Normal school of Oregon. The tow n has made many rapid changes within the last year. The Normal school is the principal attraction of this place. A large number of families have niowel here for the purpose of sending their children to school. The school is in a prosirous condition with Prof. P. L. Camp bell as Pres. The building which Is of brick, has lately been re paiuted and papered which adds much to its general appeara ice. Two hundred and eight) -two students are now enroll' d nt the Nornal, one hundred and seventy eight of whom board at the dining ball. Four societies have been or ganized by the students, two by the ladies, and two by thegent'e men. They will hold a joint ses sion at the close of this term Nov. 27. An interesting programme has been arranged. The special examination of the senior class is near at had. This class numbers forty-three. Prospects of a new hotel being built by Mr. Jordon of Arlington, and will be a benefit to the place. A flouring mill is being built between Monmouth and Indepen dence. There is talk of a cannery being built at the same place. A water company has been in corporated with a capital of $ti0.H); the woik of laying mains will soon begin.
