Arrive Depart ll.lSpmiiaeOpm 3.40pm I. aam GRUWTII Of ELECTRICITY. The wonderful growth of the cienuo of electricity is a claim of this century. An eastern paper aaya that one advantage poHfessed by electricity over steam power, the importance of which ia seldom duly considered, ia made conspicu ous by the action of the Colum bian Exposition management in c instructing and electric plant at Jackson Park sufficient to permit the doing away with steam engines within the grounds of the world's fair. The purpose ia to reduce the risk of fire. It requires no very active imagination to see in this aimple fact a fair promise of changes which will save a multi tude of Uvea and a vast amount of property. Little or no doubt exists that the steam locomotive "must go," together with the car atove and the railway lamp. We shall aee railway trains heated, lignted, and propelled by elec tricity which will be kept under such control that thee will be no more horrors of tires added to the other awful features of railroad wrecks. Wounded passenger will not perish miserably while im prisoned in the debris of biokeu cars, and freight trains which come to' grief will not burn the ties out and destroy the track while valuable merchandise is be ing reduced to ashes. Later more mosaentous charges may be brought about by the distribution of electric power, electric heat, and electric light to all par;s of cities, including mills and facto: ie from a very few great central reservoirs of electric energy, tilled either by steam power, or, per haps, by the force of the wind and the tides and waves of the sea. It need hardly be said that the re sult would be an immense decrease in the number of fires. It amounts to nothing that elec tricity ia it present very limited uses causes many tires. The ap pliances now in vogue will be eo mutjh improved upon that the fire risk will e reduced toaminimiim, and the danger to human life will also be made much less than it is now. With the general substitution of electricity for steam power, heat ing apparatus in which fuel is burned, and gas and oil lights will come the solving of the smoke problem and a marked consequent improvement, no doubt, in the sanitary conditions of life in great centers cf population, to say noth ing of comfort and icsthetic con siderations. Manufacturing cities in which bitumininous coal is used would gain enormously in attractiveness and beauty by the concentration of their fuel con sumption in a few immense power houses, where the very best smoke-consuming devices coald be employed, and which might he legated outside of the thickly populated districts. The subject is one of rare fascination for the imaginative mind. At present we can only catch glimpses of the coming wonders of the age that to b characterized by that myster ious form of energy of which we at present know so little and hoe for so much. What has already been! accomplished, however, is only a hint of the triumphs sure to be witnessed in the future, if the history of the great advances in the control and use of natural forces may be taken as a guide. 'Tux improvement of harbors and the care of our shipping commerce are the most essential matters for the general government to look after. Very truthfully the Argo naut says "California, Oregon ami Washington are essentially ocean coast states, with a coast line equal to that of the states from Maine to Georgia upon the Atlan tic. Since the establishment of the republic, the Atlantic States have had appropriations from the government aggregation more than $200,000,000 for coast defenses, navy yards, improvement of har bors and rivets, light-houses, gov ernment buildings, and incidental purposes. Since the creation of California as a state in 1850, with Oregon and Washington as im portant coast extensions noith- wardly, the total government ap propriations for every purpose have not exceeded 125,000,000. The rapid development of com merce has advanced this coast to a very imortant rank, with the prosct of equaling that of the Atlantic within the coming half century. The rich traffic of Asia and Australasia and the islands of the Pacific will en rely flow mainly to tn is coast, and this commerce is growing beyond the calculation of the most sanguine." With this consideration of the subject should also come in that of the isthmus ! ship canal, as an essential adjunct. The absurdity of the rumor from China in regard to the Charles ton's designs upon the Sandwich Islands is apparent to all who in vestigate the subject in the least. The Chronicle says that the canards about American designs on Hawaii appear to be believed by the English in China as a Shanghai dispatch to the brndon Chronicle represents the mission of the cruiser Charleston to be the capture of Honolulu while on ht-r way back to this country. It is difficult to account for such credulity except upon the theory tha' all Ilritons believed the United States will imitate their own government and seize any small power that may ba left defenseless. If this course of action had been followed by us we could have had the greater part of the American continent by this time.
