Corvallis Times: It alwas gives pride to the sporting public in this neighborhood to learn of the etories of Oregon Lclnce, the CiVi'a'lis colt. He belongs to James Foster, formerly ot this city, and has Ji'st come to tht front in San Francisco, winning a !f4iu purse at. a distance of seven and a half furlongi. As eight fur longs make a mile, it will be seen that fast time was made, as the lime g veil by the judges was 1:35 4 5. The rrcoid tor this dis tance, seven and a half furlongs, at present l:34'j held bv Leo 11. as a 3 year-old, w ith 05 pounds up at Nashville, Tenn., on May 3, 1S88. On November 4'h at San Francisco, out of some seven starts, amor g whom was Geral dine, 0 years old, who as a 3-year-old at Morris Park, N. Y., on August 20, 188!, ran a half mile in 1 :4ti carrying 122 pounds. By a Sail Fiancisco paper ot November 4th, it is seen Geraldine was ac corded a "cinch," but made the six and a half furlongs in 1 :lti 1-5 with Oregon Eclipse second by two lengths. It seems Oregon iv-lipse must have had hold of a string to thai "cinch."' biufax has previously run the distance in 1 :20, so that this now stands as a world's record for that distance, It can be reniai k- d just here that Idaho ('hie', who had eighty pounds up against Oregon Eclip-e's ninety seven puir.ds up in tiiis race, ran unplaced, iu fact, was sixth. It will be remembered that at the last meeting of the Or f'oii annculuiral society Oreuon l-i'lltill ,1-u.i 1 I'll, -I, l.lf l.l.ilii.l CLief, for w hich the Fosters paid a rfll.'O fine. On November lith, Geialdiue and Oregon Fclipse met in the seven and one-half furlong ni'.-e and Geraldine was beaten as noted at the head of this article. The r ider of Oiegoii Eclipse is an Independence b jy named Belt, son of the late Thomas Belt, and w tll known in this city. Tim Australian Ballot Law. On all hands, wherever tried, the Australian ballot law fean s to have met with general approval, and we predict tint time and ex perience w ill justify the present impression iu its favor, stjs The Hai'es Chronicle. With us it is yet an untried experiment, but al most any method wo 'd be an im provement o:i the old method of ward strikers corralling voters in a back room, tilling tl em full of wnisky, fixing their t ckets and leading the in up to the polls like so many silly sheep. The busi ness. too of buying votesatso much a head will be at an end, l 'cause the buyer will never know if the contract has been kept, the ward workers will he kept away frou: the Kills, and the voter will be permitted to cat his ballot quiet ly and without interference fro-n any one. The new system w ill be a vast improvement on tb-i old, because it will far more nearly give an expression of the people's choice of the candidates for tdlice Oregon on Wheelx. The Oregon Immigration Board's car, "Oregon on W heels.'' appears : to have made a decided hit iu the I Northwestern states.
