There has been an abundance of vigorous and impressive speaking, but no serious Tiolation of the rules of parlia mentary dignity and propriety. The records and qualifications f the candidates have been discussed in plain terms, and yet not offensively. By common consent, the weapons of scandal and slander have not been employed. There was onedeviation from thistli3ory in Ohio, but it was so quickly and decisively condemned that it did nut materially disturb the genera', condition of just and fair dealimr. The people have insisted uiion a candid consideration of euJit)g issues, with a view to reaching logical and practical conclusions. It has been a poor year fr the demagogues and the purveyors of sophistry ami falsehood. The claims of both of the great parties have been so presented as tj pro mote an intelligent understanding of the differences between them. In every state the largest crowds have greeted the speakers best posted upon important questions, rather than those given mainly to processes of accus it ion and invec tive ; and it must be admitted that the spectacle is a pleasant and creditable one. There has been an obvious tendency for several years past in the direction of im proved methods of conducting political canvasses. We have a different kind of stump oratory from that which formerly ure-1 vailed, and parties rely ngood deal more than they used to upon ap peals to reason instead of passion and prejudice. It is no longer the . fashion to invent wild stories of national peril where there is only a peaceful and healthy friction of opinion and interest. The theory that the end justifies the means in I-olilies has ceased to be a part of our philosophy. It ia not profit able any more to resort to schemes of intentional misrepresentation. The thing miy win in a single in stance, but it will not nucceed in the long run, and it is the long run that counts with parties, as with nations. The St. Louis (.libe-Ieinocrat in commenting on this fa-t says that there is a degree of publ it integrity that serves as a standing protest against dishonest practice!-, and it grows etronger evey day. Men are not a willing as they once were to excuse improper ..At....... - - uo niuijMy oecaase ihev are calcalated to defeat the plans of an enterprising adversary. The fact that such a proceeding is favorable to the voter's own party does not commend it to his ap proval. He does not care to have his side win in the way ; he does not wish to see the candidates on the other side beaten bv persona! abuHe. It is a matter of manli ness and of respect for the true spirit and purpose of our form of government. This development of popular opinion in favor ol dean and becoming olitica methods is attributable, un.inestionah'v. to the general growth of intelligence j ana culture. The National char acter is constantly becoming more critical and exacting in all things. We have considerably elevated the standard f public reditu le in our time, and the operations of Dolitira liavu tn l. - i... . . w , j,,jU;,.a l() jj situation. TI.e old po.ioy of per sonal warfare is not in harmonv with present conditions and in fluences. That i. to a major ity of the iwople are op,K)sed to it and hence it is being abandoned. The kind of talking that is noW uauianueu belongs to the evt;.,.. ! mode of thought and feeling. e are living in a period f T,r..:.;rr legaid lor the practical and use ful, and our speakers are expected to order their discourses accord ingly. The orator who only knows how to deride and traduce son,... body is not the one who i8 wanted ; his time has gone by, and he must give place to a successor w ho can disenss propositions of vital interest in a capable and effective nated for ollice it is right, of course, to point out their defects; but as a rule bad men are nominat ed for office, and so there is no reason to say harsh and mean things about them. This view rellects the present state of public taste in the case, and the country has reason to be thankful that such a salutary change has taken place. The trial of Dr. Driggs, the Presbyterian minister charged with heresy, came to a sudden termination, by the Presby tery of New York, assembled for that purpose of trying him, dismissed the charge. Religious freedom begins to be a palpable substance in these later days. WE HAVE NOT AN ELEPHANT :on our hands,: Tiik farmers of Eureka flat near Walla Walla, are making efforts to procure an artesian well for irriga tion purposes. If they succeed it w ill be a long step in advance for the agricultural interests in many loca'ities, for it will induce ven tures in that direetion. I r appears that what has been so severely denominated Quayism in Pennsylvania, was not killed as dead as certain parties predicted. It still serenely floats upon the surf tee, a vision of success at least. Fish and General Market.
