It say i one of the striking proofs of tin benefits to be derived from 1 lie Australian system of voting at election is the efforttliatisdetn-e l necessary to be put forth in teach ing voters how to fix their halluls. That a very larye proportion of the votes cast at elections under the old system were deposited under "instructions" is veiy evident. Henceforth every voter will le required to give seme thought to the important work in hand when he enters the polling booth. The "vast-pocket" plan of voting did much to encourage the intelligent casting of ballots, but the Austra lian method, as is already evident, will bring about another great ad vance in intelligence and inde pendence at elections. The voter is alone with his conscience and a blanket ballot is likely to prove a better man than the voter with a ward-worker looking over his shoulder. It is to be expected that the persuasive voice of the of the "straight-ticket'.' fanatic will be unheeded in that moment of good impulses, and that the best candidates will be singled out by expressive crosses placed oposite their names. It is impossible for a man to vote a ticket under the Australian system and at the same time to think of st mething else or of nothing at all. That careless voting has been ntusjfngly com mon cannot be doubted by those who view the present lahorious efforts of the politicians to teach men of good understanding how to make crosses with a pencil j opposite the names of their cho.-en ! candidates. The necessity of; voting and thinking- at the same time is distinctly beneliiial. blood v Chilians rary out their threats and in the defenceless condition of the cities, mav actually commit seriom depredations. These fears a--e totally without foundation, for our government can meet them with counter irritants iite sullirient to render them perfectly haiio'ess. They will hardly at tempt any such tiling and it they do will realise that thvy have trade a great mistake. The Japanese earthquake of Wednesday last turns out to be a more serious calamity than at first reported. Over three thousand lives have been lost, and there has been great destruction of property, owing to btti!ding3 being skaken down and resulting tires. No! doubt the seismic disturbances are j much severer in Japan than those ! we expe'ietice, yet there is good reason to believe tht the loss of lit sand destruction of property is due in a large measure to the defective construction of the build ings which are shaken down. Ma.-.y of the old feudal castles, which se.ru to have been cart-fully built, stand the rockings, while the later constructions of an in feiior character cnme to grief. Ir is a peculiarity of human nature that the sordid patt will gain the ascendancy and cause a man to prostitute bis energies for gold. As an outcome of this side of human nature we h ive now the picture of Thomas Nast whose1 pencil -during the Tammany Tweed matter was such a pnngtnt aid towards cleaning up much of! the tilth of Tammany, now using his pencil to uphold just what he! was working agamst at that time ;WE HAVE NOT AN-- ELEPHANT :on OUR hands; BUT WE HAVE THE LARGEST AND BERT SELECTED STOCK OF Dress Goods, Goods Underwear Hosiery, Etc, PlainfiblD THB !
