Books aie multiplied indefinitely in these days of fast printing presses, and just what books to read becomes somewhat of a puz zling iiuestion. The New Orleans Picayune gives some information on that topic by relating that there is a story of a freshman who stood undismayed before the long and lofty array of well-filled shelves in his college library, and who only wanted to know where it was usual to begin. We cannot undertake to conjecture how long he would have held out if be had been allowed to carry out bis heroic intention of attacking the whole mass in the order of ita arrangement. There are dull people who never find anything to dull to read and whoce spirit of thoroughness is superior to entertainment. They are suffi ciently rewarded when they say they have read the thing. fortunately, the art of judicious skipping is only aniai red by ex perience, and one must go through a vast deal of cliatT before he learns wkere the wheat is stored. Some thing may be gained, doubtless by consulting those who have gone before us through the world's wide wilderness of books ; but no amount of good advice can nave us wholly from a waste of precious time and eyesight' in that uarter. Some benevolent persons have of late made out lists of books that ought to be read and of books worth read ing ; but such lists are open to the criticism that they are not identi cal. It is, indeed, hardly possible for one man to tell another what is worth reading. A question of that sort mnst be largely determine-1 by taste and tendency. What is in teresting to one may piove stale, flat and unprofitable to another. A thing to be remembered always is that what one wants in a book is not simply instruction or amuse ment, but suggestion as we'l. If a writer can help you to be original, if he can (put you in the way of dis covery, lJe can help you more than another who has merely given you something of his own. Moreover, a bare list of original books will not save on from the fatigue of rer etition and the mon otony of oft repeated echoes. There may be in a bulky volume just one valuable chapter, just one priceless thought. It is important to skip not merely books, but the useless parts of books that are altogether pointless or commonplace. Young people are told that they should finish what they begin lest they should lose the habit of thorough ness and that power of persistence which is requisite to scholarship; but an enlightened student reads up his subject and skips what is irrelevant to the matter in hand It would be a mistake, however, to suppose that books are to be read only for what they directly commit nicate.or even for what they suggest in the line of their proper subject matter. A great deal may be learned from reading books, and particularly old books, between the lines. To understand the past we must get at its way of thinking, ita prevalent habit of mind, its standards of taste, its ideals. A Nation's literature is largely, if not whelly, the explanation of its his tory, aid its very mistakes are luminous when contemplated from that point of view. Livy, for in stance, travels far beyond the bounds of sober history, and lingers long in the region of myth and legend; but that part of his work is by no means worthless, for the traditions of a people, however incredible they may have become, illustrate its character and disclose something of its inspiration. Many readers, perhaps the majority, follow Mr. Andrew Lang's aimless plan, and read only what interests them. We cannot go so far a to indorse that desultory course without qualification; for one may A HATTER OF IMPORTANCE. can , tion In- One of the principal enterprises now on foot, in which the entire Pacific coast is more thoroughly concerned than any other, is the completion of the Tehuantepec canal, and the construction of a practical and complete system of transportation by the way of the isthmus route. It means the lessening, in a very material sense, of the time of reaching; a market for our cereal crop, ana also me great bouy 01 freight in manufactured articles from the Eastern states. Doubly it means an enormous lessening, to the producers and consumers on this coast, of the transportation tariffs now borne by them. A well posted Cali fornia banker iu a recent talk up on the matter said that the com pletion of that canal would be a saving of six millions annually to California. Taking the statement as a fact, for the whole coast the saving may be reckoned at not leas than nine millions. With that view of the case, it most cer tainly becomes a matter of great importance. Viul why is it not looked after mora closely and the construction and completion of the great work pushed on to a more rapid finish ? an anyone answer that question ? Has the matter been pushed forward in congress in as rapid a manner as its importance would suggest, and has the Pacific coast delegation evinced that interest in the matter that the question demands? A negative to theee questions then cans lor a reason lor the ac- or lack of action, and that reason will perhaps be hard to fully explain. Certain it is that no such state of a I lairs should be allowed to exist, for where such universal interests exists, there should most certainly be a concert of action, and a decided one at that. No cessation of construction or dimunition of zeal and activity in its prosecution, should be allowed, and congress should see to it that all rcqcisite encouragement is given, and that all possible dili gence is -?ed in forwarding the wors.
