Some prominent Albany business men are in the company and they are putting in iiui-i.inprv to work the mines. They will begin to take out coal next week, and if this coal dis covery is as good as claimed for it will prove one of tbe valuable in dustries of Oregon. A g'od pay ing coal mine is what has long been Eought in this state, and if it lias been discovered at Toledo, as it seems has been done, it will prove a bonanza. A BOFP03ED CASE OF LEFX09T. One of the six farmers' institutes that aie held during the year un der the auspices of the -State Agri cultural College will convene at Harriaburg in the last week of Oct. or first of Nov. We trust that our citizens and all farmers, in this neighborhood w ill be on hand t make the affair a success by th jir presence, and by papers and dis cussions make the meeting inter esting and instructive. It las been found that the institutes. which are for farmers especially, are the very best means of spread ing agricultural knowledge; they form a medium of exchange be tween profeseors and farmers where topics oi pracucai imerei are d s cussed and many valuable facts added to the knowledge of ail participants. These mretings are of course free to all, and to the citizens as well as the farmer a cordial invitation is extended, but the latter we would urge nnst pnrnestlv to be present and help the cause w ith statements ot his oractical experience. Four professors from the college will be present ai mis iBsmure. Many of our fanner citizens have alreadv kindlv consented to pre pare papers, and good inusic ha been most generously proimseu. Some of the subjects which will be dUcussed are : Rotation of Crops ; Hon Raisins in Linn County; Some Common Weeds ; Breeds of Hotrs and the Proper Care of Pork ; Silo and Ensilage, etc., lesides other papers of morj general in terest. It is the object of the in stitute to offer topics of interest to housekeeper as well as to the farmer, and we trust that our lalv citizens anu tanners' wives will be present at the various ses sions. It is a greit a'traction and a very appropriate one to have displays oi vegtables and fruits, grain." live stock, etc., made at these institutes, and it would be interesting and instructive to see t pecimens of canned fruit, butter, etc., and to have the makers of the same relate any special method tliey may use in preparation of the same. Mrs. Damon Smith, Sam May, J. F. Ilendrir, M. Fuller, and G. VV. Isham have been appointed as local committee on arrangements. Courier. About Tfm Postal Delivery. The Albany Herald advocates the establishment of a tree postal delivery system in that city, ap parently forgetful of the fact that the coveted privileges are only conferred upon cities where postal sales and cancellations reach a certain figure. Astorian. In this statement the Astorian is in error. Albany's postottice business has reached the required figure en titling this city to free postal de livery, or at least the postottice le ceints an considerably longer than some other Oregon rties which already have free delivery.
