The question of O-egon's exhibit
at ibe World's fair is one which
materially affects the interests of
the whole state. It is to be re
gretted that nothing as yet has
le'n done in this direction. At
th4 meeting of the chamber of
commerce Pprtland Tuesday
evening, tlie matter ol Oregon's
represent itioii at the Columbian
World's Fair was brought up and
was referred to a standing commit
tee, appointed eome time f-ince,

Cohen, II. Folgor, "L. Samuel and
Ellis ti. Hughes, who are to confer
with the committee apjiointed by
the state board of commerce.
Should the chamber of commerce
succeed in doing what the legisla
ture refused to do, they will des
erve the thanks cf the whole state,
but it will require more than
thanks to accomplish the desired
result and to have Oregon properly
represented before the world at
the World's fair.

the big steamboats from New
York to New Haven ate long over
due at their destination. Anxiety
is felt foi their safety. The
lirasliis Coining, of the Statin
line, left pier lo, North river, on

John H.Marii.of the same line
left at 0 o'clock 011 Monday night,
and the Continental, of the old
New Haven line, left Peck slip
shortly alter o cock 011 Monday
night. All were bound for New
Haven. Nothing has been heard
from them since 1 heir departure. A
telegram from New Haven last
night said that none of the three
had been reported and that grave
fears are entertained tor their
safety. The Corning had about
sixty passengers on board, as also
did the Continental. The John
Sturin had Ie89 than a dozen pas
sengers. All were laden wi.li
cargoes of general merchandise
valued at many thouusans of
dollars.

reported here that the Anchor
Line steamer City of Rome, which
saileu from New York, October 10,

yacht Geraidine, with four well
known yachtsmen of .-outh Brook
lyn on lioard, went out from
Gravcsend bay on Sunday morn
ing and has not been heard from
since. Their families fear they
were blown out to sea, in which
case their chances would not be
at all good unless they were picked
up by some larger craft.
A Fatal Shooting Affray.
Merced, Cal., Oct. 14. James
Sullivan, a laborer in the employ
of the Crofter-II utl'.nan Land and
Water Company, had trouble yes
tirday with James Shelley, fore
man of the same company. The
latter beat Sullivan, and Sullivan
cimetotown, bought a revolver,
returned to camp this morning and
shot aid killed Shelley.

here tins morning. Ac 4:30 a. al.,
people weie startled with quite a
heavy shock, and several lighter
on -s have followed. The damage
done by Sunday night's shock is
much more than was at first sup
posed, and w ill amount to several
thousand dollars. Many of the
people here were so terrorized by
the shock of Sunday evening jthut
the slightest quake now starts
them into the streets.

ding occurred between midnight
and 1 o'clock Saturday morning,
and tlie bride died ten hours later,
after making a will leaving nearly
all her property to him.
An Army Officer Arrested.
