Its new suit fits all over. A heavy gale along the John Day valley last Friday resulted in much injury to orchardi.-ts. Any amount of fruit, green and ripe, as bl wn from tne trees, damag ing it to such an extent that it cannot be put on the mar k it. B;ar8 seem to be more plentiful than common - in the Cascade mountains this year. No less than sxteen of these hnge animals have been ki.led in the mountains back of Squaw creek, during the past six weeks, says the Prineville News. .. v J. Q. Shirley, the cattle king of Union county, has purchased 700 head of beef cattle in the upper Burnt rivet section of - Baker county, and his buyers are still on the range. This will have a ten dency to ease np the cattle growers and enable them to rest more com fortably financially. The Indiana themselves are bridging the Warm Spring river at the agency. Every bridge that has been constructed over thia stream so far baa washed nut. Some of the Warm Spiing Indians are good mechanics, and they feel certain that the bridge they are now building will stand. Salmon are taken with tha hook and line quite frequently off the ciouth of the Columbia river and just inside, and the tugboat men have been enjoying rare sport for the past two weeks. A twenty pound salmon in tbe full enjoy ment of all his faculties can make more fun on the eud of a line than anything that wears fins and scales. Crouper and rock cod are found in considerable numbers when the tugboat men have time to look for them. The Oregon experiment station is prepared to send out a limited number of varieties of wheat to farmers in the state for trial. Not more than two varieties will be sent to any individual and the right to select the kinds sent is re served. Those who wish to test some of the varieties, which prom ise to excel the old sorts, can ob tain them bv sending name and postotlice address to 11. T. The Northern Pacific Company is taking up the old switchback over the summit of the Cat cades and thus one of the most interest ing feats of railroading in the Northwest will soon be obliterated While the Cascades were being tunneled for a passage way for trains, this switchback was con structed to accommodate the traf fic.
