Among those who went to Port land yesterday to see the big ex position were: X. H. Allen and wife, T. J. Stites and J. Joseph. Mr. Francis Bellinger, one of the solid farmers of Linn county in the vicinity of Lebanoa, was in Albany yesterday, looking after business matters. A regular convocation of Bailey Chapter, R. A. M., will take place at the Masonic hall to-night. Those interested will take due notice and act accordingly. Logan, pastor of the United Presbyterian church in Portland, witn Miss Mecklin of Portland, arrived in this city yes terday. Rev. Logan will assist in the dedication of the new church in Bhedd, and will remain over and preach in Dr. Irvine's church here on Sunday. Mr. E. Milner, who was report ed to have taken his old post at the Southern Pacific depot, lies not moved into the city yet, as announced. The Southern Pacific railroad depot has a change of agents at this place. Mr. W. L. Jester has resigned, and the vacancy was filled yesterday by transferring C. K: Fronk from Med ford to this place. Mr. Jester has held the position for a number of years, having been appointed when Will Rice resigned, and has gien per fect satisfaction and made hosts of friends, whose best wishes will go with him to whatever positin he may accept. He is in every case courteous, affable gentleman and an accurate and trustworthy busi ness man, faithful and to be de pended upon in every case. On October 0th the welt known and popular company, Grismer Davies, will give a highly inter esting new play called "Beacon Lights," at the opera house. An eutertainingtiine may be expected. For the benefit of many who are not familiar with the text of the Oregon Compuljory Fducation law, we publish the following ex tract from our code : Title vim. Sec. 72. Every parent, guardian or other person in this slate having control or charge of a child or children be tween the ages of eight and four teen years shall be required to send such child or children to a public echool for a period of at least twelve weeks in every school year of which al least eight weeks school shall J be consecutive, un less the bedily or mental condition of such child or children has been such as to preveni his or her or their attendance at school or ap plication to study for the period required, or unless such child or children are taught in a private school or at home in such branches as are usually taught in primary schools or have already acquired the ordinary branches of learning taught in the public schools ; pro vided, in such case a public school shall not be taught for the period of twelve weeks, for any part there of during the year, within two miles by the nearest traveled road of the residence of any person within the school district, he or she shall not be liable to the pro visions of this Act. Sec. 73. Any parent, guardian or other person having control or charge of any child or children failing ro comply with the pro visions of this Act shall be liable to a line not less than twenty-five dollars nor more than fifty dollars for the second and each subsequent offense, besides the cost of the prosecution, Sec. 74. It shall be the duty of the directors and clerk of each school district to make diligent effort to see that this law is en force! in their respective districts. Sec. 75. Justices of the peace shall have concurrent jurisdiction with the circuit court in all prose cutioni under this Act. NEWS FKOM BK0WH3VILLE, Brownsville, Sept. 24. The North Brownsville echool opened here this week with a fair attendance. A large quantity of wood is be ing hauled into town preparatory for wiuter. Six new houses are going up in town, and carpenters are in great demand. The new hotel is nearly inclosed, and the lathers have commenced work. Every man that can be got is at work on this building, and the new tin loot is nearly finished. News from the Poor man mine is very incouraging. New silver plates and fine screens arrived here for she company last night, and to-day Messrs. Ell wick and Ulanchard will start for the mine. A good report is looked for when they get the mill in shape again, although it is now saving some gold. On Friday evening the members of the Brownsville Cornet Band agreeably surprised Mr. and Mrs. Bert Willson, at their residence north of town, where the evening was spent in a most enjoyable manner. Uot th Bear Mart Miller who is camped at Green Basin, on theN'oith San tiain, for the benefit of his son's health, was out hunting on Thurs dar on Sardine creek. In an almost inaccessible canyon below the falls on the creek he espied a large black bear and brought it to trie ground by a well directed shot. It was a fine specimen, and lurmshed a lull supply of lat juicy bear steak. Mr. Allen of the O. P. train brought the head down to the city and it can be seen at Deyoe's gun store. They say that Mart was so elated over his sure shot, through the bear's heart, that lie ran all the way to camp, two miles to relate the story of his capture. - . m SurprUs Party, Last evening a very pleasant surprise party was tendered Miss Maud Hulburt at the residence of her parents, on Sixth and Jackson streets, it being the occasion of ber thirteenth birthday. A very enjoyable time was had by all present, and an elegant lunch was served. Those present were: Nellie Brown, Miss C. In the evening the topic will be, "is the World Growing Better or Worse." They were caught in steel traps, which were set by Vn Pinions for coyotes. They measured seven feet from tip to tip of wings. A regiment of turkey buzzards, numbering hundreds, was seen Monday morning, between Pen dleton and the Agency. These ill favored hiriln werft nftvpr open 1m- ! fore in that locality, and their presence in such large numbers is puzzling those w ho witnessed the spectacle. Fishing in the North Umpqna is very good at present. The banks of that river are lined with fisher men every day trying to capture the speckled beauties. The new wharfboat for the lower landing of the Cascades poitage was launched Monday at The Dalles. The boat is 130x40 feet and was built on the spot. The citizens of Milton are be' coming tired of being called moss backb. and have petitioned the council to call another election to vote for water works and electric lii?htB. Yamhill county has a population of 10,000 and has seven newspapers to furnish local news to them. The celebrated Foley Spiings, lvimr east of Eugene, near the headwaters of the McKenzie river, have been sold to an Eastern syn dicate, which it is said will make a number of improvements. Tnere are a few unruly and tin principled Indiais and half-breeds who leave the reservation and visit Corvallis without permission They make an effort to obtain whisky and are fast becoming a nuisance. The relief committee at The Dalles still finds plenty to do and the wants of no inconsiderable nvmber of people are being sup plied. About forty families have teen furnished aid. C mtributions are still arriving from outside sources. The Elk Head quicksilver mines at Lewis are on a standstill owing to the arch of one of the furnaces falling in. It will require about three weeks time yet to make good the break. Mr. Willis is no longer superintendent of the mines. There was a gentleman in Pen dleton the other 'evening who bears the distinction of having fallen from the roof of the Hotel Portland and escaping alive, withal with two broken legs, a fractured collar-bone, injured back and dislocated wrist. The acci dent happened about two years ago, and the hero of the fall, who is a tinner, named James KildiiiF, now in the employ of the Union Pacific, is nearly as good a man as ever. Bcheol Society. A literary society has been or ganized iu the Albany public school. It contains about forty members and is officered as fol lows: President, Ella Mead, vice president, Hattie Ross; recording secretary, Winnie Chamberlain; corresponding secretary, Maggie Shupp; treasurer 1 aynard Mon tanye ; critic, J.
