Harpers Bazar in mentioning the subject refers to its prevalence in old French times and says that a great deal has been said of the chaiinB of the old French salons, those delightful reunions where the brightest spirits of a sparkling era met in tree ana laminar con verse, each showing hisown draw ing i6ut the best of others. The peculiar grace of the old salon ha? passed away with the days of the old regime. Even in France the salon of this century is not that of the last. "Other people, other ways." The' society which com posed the salons of the eighteenth century was like a brilliant growth of poppies and corn-flowers nod ding and moving ia the breeze upon the roof of a thatched cot tage. Beautiful in itself, this growth is but a token of the age of the rotting thatch and that of the ruined dwelling beneath it. It needed hut the tap of a child's hammer upon the tottering lintels, and almost in a breath there was nothing left but heaps of debris, and here and there an astonished Mower left living and wondering in the midst of the destruction. ! "What were some of the iniluences which fostered the gay (lowers of the old salon? Firet of all was the freedom that comes from as sured position and social equality. Bowing to the monarch as the one supreme, and ignoring the great masses below them with an unconscious selfishness incompre hensible to-day, the men and women who composed the salons were on a social plane that ad mitted bat slight inequalities. They understood each other. If there were bickerings and jealous ies, they were like the differences in a well-disciplined family kept beneath the surface. Evciymem ber of a circle was known to all live others, not superficially, but thoroughly ; not only each in his own person, but each historically that is, in the history of his ancestors. This sort of acquaint ance is essential to the freest ex change of the thought and epigram No slightest allusion or turn of phrase is lost. The brightest of wit, the keenest Hashes of wisdom, pre those which are uttered in a strictly family circle, where all the members are bright and cultivated, and tou0'h often widely differing, are yet united by an electric touch of sympathy This sympathetic freedom was the ozone of the French salon. Its sunshine, soft an 1 genial if not penetrating, was good humor. The society of men and women who look at all things in tho pleasant est light, who njver take unmeant affronts, whose presence U always oil o;ou the troubled wateis, must of necessity be agreeable. The French have always appreciated this, and have cultivated goud humor asa polite a.couiplisnicnt. By other nations this has some' umes ueen ueetneu a token 01 in sincerity. Not eo. To be always goodhumortd is simply to ignore offenses wherever this is possible; to bear no grudge; to utter no harsh criticism ; to respect the pet foibles of one's associates; to I der ate all amiable weaknesses; to not see, or, seeing, to ignore, all the attempts of the rudely, nurtured to slight or to snub those whom they care not to favor; and even to submit to any endurable amount of imposition rather than to disturb the general peace in short, to think more of the com mon good will and happiness than of one's own individual tastes, prejudices, desires, or even rights that are not essential to one's own moral and physical well-being or to that of other persons. A aims at Muhlenberg, Ta , has completed a marvelous clock for exhib;tion at the fair. Around the dial is a railway track, on which a miniature locomotive makes the round ivery five minutes. It requires a magnify ing glass to see the delicate ma chinery. The oil cups at the journals are so small that nothing larger tn a hair can be inserted. There" is a headlight and bell, flagholdera on the pilot, whistle, and everything connected with a locomotive. It has a link motion under the engine to reverse it.
