Very often the coarge of the world is to give the cold shoulder to penona who have actual genius, and strive to employ it to a practi cal purpose. The Omaha World ays the literary periodicals are lamenting that since Lowell is dead, and Holmes, Whittier and Whitman, doting, we have no great men left. But the truth is, we do not know whether we have or not. There are a few who can see through the fog of familiarity which obscures the things of the present from the eyes of our ap preciation. Talent we recognize. Genius we pass by, not content to ignore it, bat usually adding a sneer to our neglect. " rVhat pos sible claim can contemporary criticism set op to respect," writes Sydney Lanier, "that criticism which crucified Jesus Christ, j stoned Stephen, hooted 1'aul for madman, tried Luther for a crimi nal, tortured Galileo, bound Columbus in chains, drove Dante into a hell of exile, killed Keats, cracked jokes on Gluck, Schubert, Beethoven, Berloiz and Wagner, and committed as many other im pious follies that a thousand letters would not suffice to cata logue tnem. uur g eat men are not all gone, because the world is not permitted to be without great men, and America, which is be coming the foremost country of the world, is likely to have her fall share of men "who make their way upward." Probably these great men will be in their graves before their value is recognized. But it is worth while to die, as Wagner did, for example, reviled by the nation for which he had founded a new school of art, hounded by the press, trilled with by operatic managers and misrepresented by the very singers who played his roles, if at the end of a few years, immortality is given one. "The Triumph of Wagnerisin" has furn ished the theme for many pens lately; and that triumph is the best illustration at present before the wcrld to prove that a really great leader must be out of this life before he is appreciated, or his mission recognized. So no doubt we have great men among us now, if we had the wit to know them. days, because the Chinese gov ernor declined to apologize for doing his duty in arresting a Chinese pirate boat flying the English flag. The memorable foreign attack on China was that of 1859, when Pekin fell, and the Chinese government will not want that expedition repeated. A man against whom a judgment was ootained in a suit for damages, having neglected to satisfy the same, was imprisoned, the law providing that when defendant does not pay an execution c n issue against his body. It is un necessary to inquire whether in this particular case the man could or could not pay, for it cuts no figure in the matter. Incarcera tion lor long debt has long since been set down as barbarous and unreasonable, because it is too often made an instrument to wreak vengeance and is rarely ever efficacious in deterring people from becoming improvident, or in recovering from them what has been wasted in improvidence. The Chinese were chastised by the English in 1838 40, during the dis graceful "opium war" by which England secured Hongkong and opened Canton, Anioy, Foo Chow Foo, Ningpoo and Shanghai to trade, and the Chinese bad to pay England 5,75O,0JO 'odemnity and damages.
