The later scientific investiga tions, in proportion as they shorn from the cobwebs and trammels of superstition and preconceived notions that ags and heredity had so permanently fixed, are develop ing a true undet standing of the great set rets of nature with won derful rapidity. It often takee as great an effort- to free a subject from the trammelling errors of belief that ages of arbitrary con jecture has fastened to it as ap parently as it does to elucidate the true facta of the case. Our age and day 1b especially empowered for this taik, and the clear light of true investigation is fast dissolving the myths of superstition, and the bug-a-boos of giant hands to bar progress or the wierd forces pnl np to rend and tear to presump tions investigators, no longer bars J the onward march. Step by step the true laws that govern the uni verse are coming into view and inte a proper conception, and the result is that mankind is enabled to harness the forces of nature to do its behests. In electrical science this is especially the case. Disco vei if s are constant and im portant. The Philadelphia Record notices a recent one, in saying that the recent discoveries of Professor Bigelow appear to prove conclu sively that the earth is a dynamo, and that it geus'tes electricity by revolving in front of thair"u magnet the sun. .Since the day when Newton illustrated by the fall of an apple to the earth the law of gravitation and the reten tion of the planets in their regular orbits about the sun, solar science , has made wonderful strides. I'atient investigators, aided by the marvelous products of human in vention, have scanned the depths of space and widened our- concep . tions of the vast forces and activities which prevade the uni verse. The influence of the sun and moon upon the earth and the relations between light and elec tricity have long been favorite subjects for .Ecientists, while at the came time they are fo inti mately associated with every form of life npon this planet that every thing which leads to a clearer un derstanding of the principles in volved in them is of deep interest to all thinking minds. Each re curring eclipse of the lun or moon has been welcomed by astronomers as affording fresh opportunity to study the composition of that great luminary. The nature of the corona, which, appears at these things, has long been a mystery, but now that the spectroscope and the camera have come to the aid of science we are gradually reach ing definite conclusions as to its composition. - Professor Bigelow ttnda mat tne coronal steamers or rays correspond o the lines of force in a spherical magnet, and if this can be demonstrated, then the existence of sun spots is ac counted for, as they are simply the matter of which the corona is coin pesed falling perpendicularly to the sun's surface. If the corona, then, ue 01 magnetic origin, so also must Le the aurora boreal is, ' end if it can be shown that these auroral displays conform to the lines of magnetic force emerging from the earth, w would then, Professor Bigelow points out, have a more complete demonstration of their nature and of the harmony between solar and terrestrial phenomena. We might also find then, npon fr'ther examination, that not only does the sun act up on the earth through the medium of interstellar ether, by magnetic induction, but the earth reacts npon the moon in a similar man ner, that is, magnetically. But it is the professor's discovery regard ing terrestrial magnetism that is ot the greatest immediate praili- cal importance, to say nothing of its far-reaching results; To know that sunlight is really magnetic, and that it exerts its influence up on the earth, trill prepare the way for all explanation of many phe nomena the "how" and the "why" of wh ich are aa yet mysteries. Thb startling fact is shown by reports of the Massachusetts com missioners of prisons that during the last five years, while the pop ulation of the state has only trebled, the number of criminals has increased fifty fold. There hi one prisoner to every 400 inhabi lants in the state, and in Boston one to every 222 inhabitants. This large proportion, however, in eludes re-commitments. These facts are interpred by Mr. William P. Andrews, for many years clerk of the criminal court at Salem Mass., aa evidence tnat tne "re formatory" conduct of prisons has caused an alarming inciease of crime, and that the substitution of reformatory far punitive treatment is fact bringing us to state socialism through the attractiveness of prison-life. Mr. Andrews will contribute an article to the Octo ber Forum, containing the results of many year's observation of the working of the two systems. Poor Jefferson Davis was not even a success in the matter memoir construct'on, for it is said that the suit begun by Mrs, Jefferson Davis against the pub lishers of her husband's memoirs discloses the fact that the book was not a very successful one, The memoirs had a certain value as a contribution to the history and no doubt on that account will find a place in many libiaries. But it did not appeal to the people in any way, and there fore, was not a success pecuniarily. O. K. T. Uonest Besolts.-O.
