Conrad Meyer's new oven is now completed, and he is better prepared ttan ever to serve his old customers as well as new ones with the best of fresh bread, cakes, in fact everything from the dainti est tut rclls to the most elaborate wadding cakes. Houaekeejr? are invited to give the product of his new oven a trial. Pickpockets are a great annoy ance at the state fair. S. Jones, of Portland was robbed Thursday of $150. Judge K. S. Strahan was robbed of $20, and Mrs. A. II. Lafollet was robbed of a small sum. Numerous other robberies of email sums are reported. The robberies were all committed in the jam oc casioned at the stopping of the street cars, at the f lir grounds. There will be a baby day at the Portland Industrial Exposition, on October, 12, and every fonU mother for miles around will gaily hie her to the grand exposition building, baby and all, with the proud cou scioasiness that with her minding no other can compare. Settlers up on the North Sari tiam are looking forward anxiously to the completion of the govern ment surveys now in progress be tween Halstead and the eastward end of the Oregon Pacific railroad. A gentleman named Bushe has beeu awarded the contract for sur veying townships 10 south, range 5 anfU east, where there are a large number of squatter claims. Township 10 south, range 4 east is being surveyed by Mr. Caiupbel!. Both surveys will be completed this fall, which will enable man settlers who are now only holding their lands by squatters' rights, tu obtain title to tho same. A rarawell Tarty. The company is carrying on the work on a business basis. They know the value of the ore, and are now putting in machinery to work it. Before the year is ended it is be lieved that the work w 11 develop the fact that a profitable mining industry tributary to Albany is an established fact, and the gold and silver bars from these mines will be pro luced in quantities sum ient to ineure profitable returns for the capital invested. UiaU's hop house, located a short distance below town, was consumed by lire last Fiiday. It is not known how the fire originated. Several hundred pounds of hops were burned with the building. The total loss ap proximates $200. No insurance. The Warm Spring Indians who come to the valley every year to pick hops, are growing more independent with the flight of time. Before ttiey would agree to pick hops tor Scott Wallace, they raised the price to 75 cents a box, and also stipulated lor free pasttir age for their ponies and to make iheir demands as unreasonable as possible, thev asked for a quan tity of that lnterdicttd beverage whiskey. A dispatch from Brownsville says that Hugh Fields and J. II Washburn are figuring upon an enterprise by which that town will become a noted health resort, The aim of these men is to lay a pipe from I ppei Soda to Browns ville, a distance of thirty-hve miles, and bring th-i soda water down into civilization. The Lane County Driving Asso ciation is U6ing every etlbrt to secure a good string of horses at the fall meeting on the track near Eugene, October I and 2. One thousand dollars is hung up in purges. A passenger and freight depot will be built at Natron, on the Oregonian railway. Natron is now called Jasper by the citizens of Lane county, but the railway com pany seems to want a more fastid ious name. Nearly every warehouse is sur rounded by farmers' wagons, loaded with wheat, and every road leading to the city, says the Cor vallis Times, is lined with moving grain. Every load means about $50 in the farmer's pocket, and for the time being the granger is king. The Methodist Episcopal minis ters of Portland and vicinity are invited to meet at Taylor street church, in the parlors on Monday, September 28. 10 a. m., for the purpose of organizing for the year. It is expected that Rev. M. C. Wire will read a paper oi that occasion. Harvest throughout Polk county has ended. The yield in some localities has exceeded the average, in others it has fallen short. Some of the threshing crews have made phenomenal ruus. That of James Elliott, of Dal lis, threshed 4610 bushels of wheat and oats in one day.
