The Lebmnun Canal.
Mr. T. J. Bell, foreman of the
Lebanon canal work, who with
contractor Price was injured in a

Mr. Bell states that work is pro
gressing favorably on the canal,

The state agricultural society
held its regular annual session
Tuesday evening. This is the
original society that conducted
the fair, in latter years in con
junction with the eta e board of
agriculture. J. T. Apperson was
re-elected president. The society
adopted a resolution authorizing
the president and secretary to
deed to the state board ot agricul
ture alt lands, buildings, etc., of
the society. Another resolution
does away with the old boaid of
managers and hereafter will only
lect the president, vice-president,
aecretary and treasurer. i

Hop. J. K. Weatherford, one of
the attorneys for the Oregon Pa
cific employes in their suit

terday by a Herald reporter on
his return from Corvallis.
He said that if the court held
to th 3 decision made the employes
would get their money by the 2Mb
of October at the latest and per
haps before. The order of the court
reauires that the earnings from
the 15th inst. be ptid to the men,
and that Col. T. E. Hog be cited
to iihow cauBe why he should not
be removed as receiver ot tne
road, for refusing to obey the
former oider of the court to pay
the men on or before Sept. 14.
Receiver Hogg is under a good
and sufficient bond of $50,000 and
if he still refuses to pay the men
this will be forfeited and hn will
be removed from the receivership.
This be cannot well auord to allow,
and it is belived that he will pay
the men on or before the time set
in order to retain the receiver-
ahio.

doing Judge Pipes an injustice in
recounting his actions in this
case, but this is a mistake

to say, nor any more than justice

The Oregon l'acihc has been
earning a neat little fortune yearly
over and above the legitimate
running expenses, and there is no
excuse for the proper portion of
these earnings not to have been
paid to the employes.

Soda that these Indians have
killed this fall not lees than 1000
deer in this wanton .manner
They certainly ought o be prose
cuted. Many of them are still
hunting in that vicinity.

Cattlemen of Crok county feel
a little uneasiness regarding the
demand for heef this fall. Tin-
supply of beef being greater than
was expected, there is no certainty
that there will be a market for all
the beef in Crook countv this rea
son, and cattle raisers may have
to rarrv their steers over another
year.
A farmer who ha j 100 acres in
grain on the Umatilla reservation
has almost finished harvesting.
The yield will average about
twenty-five bushels per acre, it
not coming up to the sxpectations
of some weeks since. However,
it will yield a handsome profit to
the owner at the prevailing prices.
A myrtle log shipped from Co;is
bay to Port'and, hold for iffjO. Of
this $18 went for freight, but even
at this rate, says the Coos Bay
Sun, the Coquille river can ship
enough timber of that kind to
make half its citizens and fourteen
steamer lines lich. The timber
destroyed there in t!;e paht would
bring mints of money, and it is to
be hoped that tuch destruction
will cease.

Many States have stringent laws
againsfood adulteration, but they
fail to check the evil. It is on the
increase. The last report of the
Dairy Commissioner of New Jersey
shows that 43.!H per cent., or
nearly hall" the food preparations
submitted to him for examination
were adulterated. Some times
the adulterations were harmless
and in these cases the purchaser
would be only swindled, but in
many instances rank poisons were
found in articles of every day con
sumption. A large percentage of
canned vegetables, such as neas
i and string beans, were found to
contain copperas, used to give a
green coloi, and a number of bak
ing powders had been "doctored"
with ammonia to give an artificial
leavening strength nnd to permit of
carrying more waste matter. In
these cases there is not only f-aud
but danger to the public health.
