A writer in the Oregonian, lab oring under a misapprehension of facts, gives Mavor McClung of Eugene an unkind stab, saying: "Mayor McClung, of Eugene, does not believe in allowing a circus narade through the streets of the city, and Monday evening he ve toed an ordinance which had been passed giving the circus the privi- ledge of parad ing." The ordinance was on the contrary prepaired to require the circus to pay $150 for parading the streets ot Eugene, because the show exhibited out side the city limits to avoid pay ing license. Mayor Meriting very properly vetoed it. The Cow got Drunk, L Angles Progress. Some days ago one of our countrymen, who lives at Pasa dena was astonished to see one of his best cows lying apparently dying in front ol the barn-. Hie animal lay there inert, with open eyes, oblivious of every thing. The'man called a veterin ary surgeon, who could diagnose the case, and a butcher was scut for to bleed the animal. He was some time in arriving, and when he did come the cow was found eating at a haystack, but with legs a little uncertain. An investigation followed, and it was found that the cow had eaten copiously of the refuse at a neighboring winery, tins stun, composed of grape skins aud stems had lermenteti, anu inuuceu a state of intoxication. The floor hangs about ' twelve feet above tne water and is swung from two cables, each one of whict is made of six telegraph wires twisted together. The French are belivijd to be the first people in Europe to usb nlavinir cards, and. asfirst made. cards were Etipposeejf to represent the different classesif persons in the kingdom. The hearts were the "choir men," or ecclesiastics, and early cards of this snlt have a cope, which, in form, somewhat resembles a heart. ; The figure by us called a spade was originally a pike head, and typified the nobility and soldiery; the artisans were represented by a stone tile, now known as diamond, while the farmers were rymboH.ed by the trefoil or clover leaf, by us called club. The four kings were originally David, Alexander, C; sar vand Charleiiiangne, representing the four great monarchs, while the queens were Argine, Ester, Judith and Pallas, typical of birth, piety, fortitude and wisdom. Argme be ing an anagram for Ilegina. ! The knaves were either knights or servants to knights, but which is uncertain, though the for ner conjecture is the more probable, from the fact that on cards of an early date appear the names of famous knights. Bananas as Food aui' MedJclae. Dr. John Dongall, of St. Mungo"s College, Glasgow, has a letter in a recent issue of ttn Glasgow Herald on the banana. He quotes from Stanley's '"In Darkest Africa," showing ttiat "for infants, persons of delicate digestion, dyspeptics and those suffering from tempor ary derangements of the stomach, the flour, properly prepared, would be of universal demand." During Stanley's two attacks of gastritis, a slight gruel of this flour, mixed with milk, was the only material that could be digested. It is odd, also, as pointed out in Stanley's book, ttiat in most banana lands Cuba, Brazil, West Indies the valuable properties of the banana as an easily digested and nourish ing food have been much over looked. Dr. Dougall has male some experiments in making ba nana flour, lie concludes ttiat it should be made from the tipe fruit at its place of production. In try ing to make it trom bananas pur chased in Glasgow, he obtained on drying the pulp a tough sweet mass like toasted ligs, an appear ance probably due to the convt-r- sion of starch into sugir. Bananas contain only al o it 5J per cent. t.f pulp, and of this about io per cent, is water. fhev will vield, therefore, oulv one-eighth part of fi-jur. French Tauy AVafers.
