Arrives Depart tr atnener. tit,'ht..M, . 11.13pml2.20pm J a.4uprm 7.46 l m LIFE IS A BATTLE. Existence in not only human life, but also in animal life, is a constant warfare. Enemies abound on all sides, and self in terest does not scruple at the destruction of other lives. Such a statement seems on first sight to be broad and untenable but on full consideration ill be found to be absolutely true. Mrs. Gorton, in Popular Science News says that "in the animal creation are exhibited so many traits that the characteristic of the human species that we might regard this or that phenomenon as an example of human nature; and in one trait is the parallel to be drawn with greater fidelity in the faithfulness cf the likeness between certain animals and maa than in the art of swindling. There are on record plana of the greatest ingenuity, j invented by him whose energies are conserved against the rightful belongings of another ; and accord ing to Sir John Lubbock, animals recognize the basic right to property each member of a com munity to the produce of his ovin labor and therefore robbers are robbers, whether animal or human beings. Of the vast and often successful frauds perorated, there is a constant surprise at the accurate physical insight and ability developed by the operator in the transaction, as also never ending wonder at the sim;le credulity or helplessness of the victim. This is seen among ani mals to such an extent that pity often becomes swallowed up in derisive contempt for the injured party; and the cheeky marauder wins the prize from the luckless victim of his arts, and also wins applause for his aptitude in secur ing booty. On the plains and along the broad bottoms of the Missouri River are the cobnies often a community of many mem bers, with villages of wide extent ji the American marmots, or prairie dogs. Merry, cheery, chipper little fellows, these gregar ious villagers sit on the mound above or beside the open door that leads to their comfortable sub terranean dwelling?, and hold converse in short, not unmusical barks, each greeting his neighbor and rejoicing in the sunshine. But into the sanctity of the home which he and his have constructed with much labor, the burrowing owl comes, uninvited, and becomes a tenant with a life lease, without so much as "by your leave;" and one of the most atrocious results of this swindling arrangement is that the dog (a strict vegetarian) finds the owl, whose young shares the nest with the infant marmots, feeds upon them, and reus its young upon the bod.es of the children of its victimized landlord. Another ami much more vicious tenant is the prairie rattlesnake; but his visits are few and far be tween, and when he does come it is in a character, quite often, of avenger, as it b.is been demon strated beyond a doubt that owl pie is one of his favorite dishes, which seems just, for his more ravenous appetite requires several to satisfy, especially if young and juicy. The dogs are also at the mercy of this rapacious pirate, One of the most notable instances of "beggar-ruy-neighbor'' is the cuckoo, which lives, is bred, and nurtured by the lalor of other birds; and this habit is the rule of many birds. Sea gulls and ospreys are systematically robbed of the fruits of thtir labors by the long beaked pirates ever on the alert to rob. There seems very little ex cuse for these shameless swindles, as the bald eagle aisi the white headed eagle each the worst in this particular of its kind are well fitted by nature to provide themselves with their own fish. That animals have no n.etbcd of redress does not fill our ideas of abstract justice, and "survival of the fittest" seems a cruel code. There is another view of this in teresting topic : There are many insects, birds and beasts that pre serve their being by stimulating what they are not, that they may remain undistinguishible and escape the pit falls that may lie in wait for them; also to catch the unobservant and destroy them. Among these are the "spectre insect," the ''walking-stick insect" and the "praying insect" (Mantis religiosa), which is constructed, with its forelegs stiff and thrust into the air to resemble a withered twig, that it may escape foes from this very resemblance, also that it may catch any unwary insect that ventures near for its own subsistence, thus stimulating an attitude of patient endurance quite like those scavengers of the human race the pious beggars who simulate faith and patient en durance, but are really burglars and robbers. The sphnix cater pillar also simulates what it is not, and escapes its enemies by putting on a false appearance, and also attracts its food in a like manner. The good old-fashioned spelling natch has succumbed to the "pronunciation bee." There is no question that correct pronuncia tion is more important than coi rect spelling, for people speak far oftener than they write. With the arbitrary rules governing the pro nunciatiou of so many English words it takes long training to secure accuracy. Take one hun dred people and it is doubtful whether ten could pronounce cor rectly such common words as coadjutor, diocesan, squalor and isolate. Try these four words on any company and the result will surprise you. Beautiful Women. The mairical effects of Wisdom's Robertine as a beautiher and preserver of the complexion have been attested by thousands of leading ladies of society and the stage. It is the only article ever discovered which gives a natural and beautiful tint to the complex ion, removing tan, sunburn, freckels and ail roughness of the face and arms, leaving the skin soft, smooth and velvety. All re mark on its delightfully cooling and refreshing properties, a distinction not found in any other similiar article known, Tor sale Dy os nay & .Mason.
