There was a pretty little trotting race out at the fair grounds track at Salem Friday between three horses now in training there says the Statesman. Thev were A. S. Beg;:sVDick Flaherty," Bright it Cox's "Rosemon," and George Good's "Thookydeeds." It was for the best two in three, and in the first heat only "Kosemon" ai.d "riiookydeeds" were started The former took the heat; time 2:55. In the second "Dick r laherty " won the heat by a neck, over Good's pacer; time 2:45. The little trotter was shut out Flaherty is a pretty good horse, having "defeated Oneco, Olander, and Maude Knox in three etraight heats at Cily View. He was sired by Fearnaugh. Beggs issues a challenge to "Thokydeeds" for the best two in three, race to be on the fair grounds here early in September. Kosemon's diiver also issues a challenge for a race with the good horse, the contest to be on September 1st. A Cent a Mile to The World's Fair. F. C. Vierling, a Chicago alder man, wh j passed through Port land Friday on his wav to San Francisco, in speaking of the world's fair, said: "The com mittee is now working for a rate of 1 cent a mile over all the railroad for the round trip. That would bring vour Oregon people to Chi cago and carry you back again for $25. Another thing we intend to lo, ami that is to bring the New Yorkers, who have so iar done all the kicking, for between $10 and fl) the round tup. Hie mam point we are aiming at now is to get the round trip rates down to 1 cent a mile. The Sheep Do the Kent. Roy Stuart, little son C, J. Stuart, came very near meeting with a fatal accident at Yaiiuina, tie was playing on a scow, and a party of young men were shooting at a mark near uy that happened to be in range with the boy. Just in front- of the engine fell two or three large rocks, each about half the size ol acoac i, which would have de molished the train had they happened to strike it. Ashland Tidings: Contractor Erickson, who has been at work lilling in the lailroad trestles be tween Ashland and Wagner Creek, a distance of five miles, with a force of 100 men is about ready to rush operatiors. He is now put ting up tents at Faruhain's field to increase his force of men to four hundred next Monday, when work commences on the big cut, which will do away with the dangerous curve around the blntl' this side of the nrnes. 'ibis will move the track up the mountain some 00 feet further. The cut will ba about 300 Let l nr and aliout fifty feet deep and will re quire the removal of much uiit. Robert Terry, the 10 year-old son of Mis. J.L.Terry, living on I'ine street met with an accident Monday afternoon which came near blowing him into the king dom come. While playing with two smaller children of the I'airi'y he found a can of gun-powder which he took into the vard, placed some on a board, touched it oil' and commenced pouring the con tents of the can on the blaze, which blew t'.ie can out of his hands and knocked it high in the air and smashed it into a complete smash-up. The boy's face is a blister, his hair singed, and his right leg and right arm up to the elbow was burned. He will re cover. The family came here from Spokane Falls several months ago and purchased the G. L. Dean place. llillsboro Independent: The case of the state vs. l.yda and McLeod, charged with throwing sawdiibt into the creeks near their mills, was tried before Judge Humphreys last Thursday, result ing in Mr. I.yda's being found guilty as charged, and lined $100 and costs. He at once took an appeal and the case will come up at the next te-in of Circuit Court, when thi! Constitutionality of the law will be tested. Mr. McLeod was acquitted, the proof against him not being so clear as against Mr. Lvda. or it inav be that, his heing a jury trial, t lie jurors were influenced somewhat by their sympathies. S. W, Cresson, of lleppner. was robbed by two confidence men on the train from Arlington to Pen dleton. The threshers on the firm of Obe. Green, near L:ncoln, report some remarkable yields of grain. Sixty acres of oats made an average of fifty bushels per acre and the average on twenty-live acres of wheat was forty bushels. . At last accounts the b ;dv of Mr. Wiley, drowned in the i'miNiiia river at llendrer's place, below Elktou, had not bctn lecovered. lie was aliout 30 years old, un married an I hail no relatives in this country so far as known. The road is in a passable condition but lacks a great deal of being iiret-class. In the matter of the death of Frank Ken; on in Camas vallev, in which poisoning is alleged. Judge Kiddie, of Douglas county, has concluded that he has no authority to order a post-mortem examination, as petitioned for. He has wr tten totho justice there to excerise his own discretion in the matter as acting corner. The case of John Austin and Juthridge. who were arrested at Pendleton, has been continued un til the atrival of Miller & Lux's agent. It is stated that a telegram from Miller Lux h is been re ceived from San Francisco to hold these men for prosecution, and that every effort will be made by the cattle kings to convict them if them are guilty. A big ditch to tap the Owyhee river wiil be dug this fall. The head of tne ditch will be tix miles from the mouth of the river, where it empties into the snake. The new canal will be built by F.nglish capital and the cost is estimated at $-.'50,000. Its capacity will he 200,000 miner's inches, "and w ill irrigate 200,000 acie3 of land in the Owyhee valley. The announcement of the last cheap excursion of this season to to Newport has caused a rush for tickets, and no doubt the largest crowd of the year will leave this morning for the seaside. The management has been able, through the kindnees of the O. P. R. li. Co.'s officials, to allow all who wish the privilege of remain ing over uhtil either Monday or Tuesday, which will be highly appreciated by many who other wise would be unable to partici pate in the varied pleasures afforded by a brief visit to the ocean beach. The salmon fishing season is now at its height and many fine Chinooks are daily cap tured in Yaipiina bay. The surf is warm and pleasant, and as the undertow bo common at the other ocean resorts has never been felt at Newport, the bather may enjov a dip in the waves without danger.
