The Lati Balis did no Material Damage Tiraihiag Commenced. Crop-Weather Bulletin, No. 22. Following is for the week ending Saturday, August, 8th 131l. The temperature has been from 2 to 5 degrees a day below the average for the week. On Tues day and Wednesday thunder storms were quite general and rain fell, especially in the Wil liamette valley and along the coast ; rain also fell on Thursday and Friday, while to-day is clear ing weather and warmer. The rain fall was heaviest in Multno mah and Columbia counties and gradually decreased to the south, especially south of Marion county ; south of the Calapooia mountains less than .15 of an inch of rain fell, In northern part of Wil lamette valley about .75 of an inch of rain fell ; in a few sections hail fell on the 5th. The rain did no material damage to the wheat crop ; much of the fall wheat was cut and in shock, ready for the thresher, and about all the damage done was the de lay which will crowd fall wheat thrashing and spring wheat cut ting close together. There are a few reports of wheat having fallen, but this is practically nothing. A countinuatiou of the rain would have caused the wheat to spout the clearing weather was moBt timely. Threshed wheat in Polk and Yamhill counties has been averaging from -o to 40 busneis ter acre; oats also yield well In some sections plowing for snmnipr.fullowini? ia in nroires.s The rains were oi great benefit ,t6 root crops, gardens, pasturage young orchards and had a tendency to destroy and cause a cessation of tiie averages made by the nor louse and codlin moth. The four days lain was most unusual fo this season of the year, but for tunately, no damage was done and good results lrom it are ex pected. Eastern Oregon-weather l lie temperature has tieen considerably below the average for the season of the year. The weather has been cloudy or partly cloudy and general showers prevailed on Thursday and Friday, raging from 04 of an inch at Hie Dalles, .0 ot an inch at Baker City. In the Blue mountains in Union, Wallowa and Baker counties snow fell on the night of the 5th. The tern iierature was so cool that tares were neeessarv in the house for comfort The rains delaved harvesting and threshing for two days; no damage was done to the wheat by the ram, though it did some damage to the hay crop east and south of the Blue mountains In Wasco county fro:u Dufur to fhe Dalles the wheat is shrunken and the yield is poor ; some smut is to be found; in other sections the wheat yield is good. In Gilliam county there is Borne rust. In Morrow county the wheat is yielding even better than was exiiected. In Umatilla county the yield is better than for many years. Wallowa, Union, Baker, Crook Grant and other interior counties have excellent prospects. COAST NOTES. Prineville Review: Laet Mon day another of Mr. and Mrs. John Savage's children died with diph theria, making four in all who have been cut down in little over a week. Such an atlliction as this is indeed hard to bear, and the sympathy of the entire community is extended to the bereaved par ents. Only a short time ago their family was composed of eight sprightly, robust children. Now only four are left, four haying fallen victims to the dread disease, and were carried alway almost without warning. Old Township Surveyed. Cottag? Tfi big Tfed atfeW keenui Ot Sells Brothers' Enormous United Shows, which are to ex hibit at Albany, Wednesday Aug. li), it may be truly said that "age cannot wither no" custom pall their infinite variety." This, the twentieth year of their vastly pro gressive existence, they coine to us with an array of sensations, spectacles, performances and liv ing wonders from every clime, simply bewildering. In fact there is scarcely room to mention separ ate departments, let alone the hundreds of features that go to make of each a great and amazing show . Besides every notable variety of rare wild beasts, includ ing the tremendous pair of living , . . : i i - nippopoiami; every act possioie to human nerve, agility, and in genuity and brute sagacity; the excitement of the thrilling hippo drome races, the rare specially ex hibited features, and the ravishing dancing of the great Spanish artist, Cyrene, there is to be con sidered the wild Moorish Caravan, introducing the most wonderous feats of barbaric agility and strength, and appearing quaintly and superbly arnrid and equipped in the grand, novel and romantic and spectacular pilgrimage to Mecca. From performing mam moth or huge disporting amphibia to daintiest detail there is noth ing inferior or commonplace about this extraordinarily rich and at- sictive alliance. It possesses ery leature, teat and display, oi boVi home and foreign origin, in g with such an entertain- menthat can be procured, and many nowhere else to be seen. Its morning glorious street parade is a free introduction to a holiday none should miss. IN MEM0RIAM. Hall ok Dikkdoiifk Lodi;i;, ) No. 54, I. O. O. Geological Discovery, Newport Times: The sand cliff fronting the Ocean at this place, in addition to the grand problems they have hitherto afforded the scientific worker, now adds another great interest to the gnologist in the fact that they are proved to be full of fossil remains. The head and ribs of an immense sea horse of the middle tertiary period, which found its grave more than half a million years ago, has just been disintered by .Ylr. .S. Uent.ey aud given over by him to l'rof. Condon of the State Uuiversity for preservation. Al the earnest solicitation of some Portland and Salem gentlemen who happened to be on the ground, l rot. Condon consented to give a familiar talk of these cult forma tions Thursday and explain how Mr. Sea Lion was captured. A large audience assembled to hear bis lecture, which was a practical lesson in geology not soon to be forgotten by his hearers. This will undoubtly lead to the dis covery of many more valuable fossils in the cliffs about the Resort City. Dont fail to see the fossil ; you miss it if you do.
