The Florida Times- Union collated that under the sugar bounty law, which waa passed by tiie last con gress, all persons wishing to secure the bounty are required to tile ap plications for licenses. All the ap plications for this year are now in, and the suar bureau of the in ternal revenue department has made public the totals of the esti mates of, the prospective product made by the manufacturers in the various sugar producing states. Of course these are oiriy to be ac cepted as approximations to the actual production, but as such they are valuable, if only as show ing where the di Ho rent varieties of sugar are produced and their rela tive importance. Cane sugar con-! tinuea as yet to be of overshadow- J ing imparlance, snd almost the entire I product comes from Louisiana. There have been re ceived from Louisiana 104 applica tions calling for 5."0,000,000 pounds ; from Texas, 15 applica tions calling for 14,S07,00;) pounds, and from Florida 11 applications' calling for :!,5.si,r00 pounds. Next in importance, and of peculiar in terest, is beet pillar. There are seven applications from four state, the estimated number ot pounds being as follows: Cali fornia, lt;,0OO,i,'OC) ; Utah, 7,2i0:0i0 ; Nebraska, r.,000,0t0; Virginia, 10, 000. Of applications for bounty on sorghum sugar there are three from Kansas calling for 2.1,000, 000 pounds. The third and least iin ortant kind is maple sugar, but only a rough estimate can be made as to this. There are 3,200 appli cations in the hands of the collector for the New Hampshire district. As five hundred pounds is the minimum ior which a license is granted, and as a con siderable amount of maple sugar is produced in other states, it is lH'lieved that the total production will reach 5,000,000 pounds. Ac cording to these estimates the total product of sugar ia expected to be as follows: From cane, iiW,:WS,-')00 pounds; from beets, 2!,210JW0 pounds; from sorghum, 2),OO0,O0O pounds; from maple, .",O0O,0'H) pounds ; total OO.'i.O'.K.oOO pounds. The bounty on this, at 2 cents a pound, would be 12,101,. sro. The manufacture of new naniei d jos not seem to agree w ith the Khuira Telegram, fur it sixes up the latest ones by saving that some of the highly hypercritical journals are pointing out that the word ("electrocution," which is creeping mco newspaper use, is uuerij wiuioui excuse lor uein.;, excepl that it is pressed in service on thtj score of necessity, the idea being that w hile the first half of it, "electro" is rational enough, the last half, "cution," is pure gibberish, having no more mean ing than the famous nonsense word "gnark." "Klectrocide" and "electroiision" are suggested as substitute names for something which is otherwise nameless. Hut, after all, it probably makes little dilTercnce to the poor devils who get out of it all when the button is pressed. A rose by any other name woAkl smell a SAect. i Si'EEHv and just punishment for crime, both as a correction for the individual committer and as a de terring influence upon others, meets with popular approval. A case of this kind recently occurred in the old keystone state, and ii mentioned as follows: Verily, the ay of the trangressor is Lard ia Pennsylvania. Justice was not very sleepy in Philadelphia the other day, when she sent spinning through the Jock and out to Cherry J (ill, for fifteen years, a young villian who committed a nameless crime on a helpless child, less than forty-eight hours before. Such men are simply wild beasts, who never ought to be at large. It isateiriblethingto contemplate the existence of such creatures in these enlightened days, but the only thing to do when one is caught is to make him a terrifying example to those of his kind. In some parts of the country they are not dealt with in such an orderly and even merciful manner. The public wrath expends itself in a much more tragic manner. The entire public sincerely sympathizes with the Philadelphia judge, who regretted that he couldn't make the young raecal's sentence for life. Some peculiar notions become prevalent and actually enter into the action of legislative bodies, as for instance city councils. The Telegram says that Roseburg city council has passed an ordinance prohibiting entirely the use of bicycles on the streets. A Salem paper wants such an ordinance adopted in that city. What the great danger of the machines is hard to understand but it is evi dent that it must be something very deadly. There is almost as as much noise and dirt, and some fraction of as much danger, in railway trains passing through a city. Next we expect the Rose burg city fathers will prohibit the Southern Pat i lie from running through the town. Hair of bite tinds the story covered the dog will cure the a new illustration, in that a doctor has dis that bichloride of gold cures drunkenness. The investing of gold in drinks causes drunkenness, and under the alore named theory the application of gold in some manner should cure it. HUMPHREYS bit.
