OKKCON PACIFIC TIMETABLE. Arrives Departs r avenger. FltlKht.- ll.l::pru 12.20pm . 3.40pm 7.45 a m TUB GOLD SUPPLY. Considerable curiosity Las been aroused over the fact tiie govern ment is assuming the expense of of deep well borings in Virginia. The -New Orleans Picayune com ments that it appears that ail effort has been made to induce congress to provide for an artesian boring into the earth, to be prosecuted until the greatest depth possible shall be arrived at. With some the object is to gratify scientific curiosity, but it ia claimed br others that in this way might be possible to discover enormous de posits of gold. It seeni3 that the greatest depth ever readied by mining or boring is at Speling, (crmany, where a w hole has been sunk to thedislance of something less than a mile. I'tit it does nut appear that any gold was dis covered, nor is it the exrience of miners that gold is found m large J im.intities at great depths. The gold found in iiuartz veins is rich est near the (surface, and as any considerable depth is reached the gold becomes less in quantity until it finally "plays out." Not bo with silver. Silver ores are profit ably worked at a depth of 1,000 to 3,000 feet below the surface, and often vein that afforded gold near the suriace lose their value as gold mines when a considerable depth is reached, but may still furnish silver in paying quantities. In connection with the fact the rich est gold deposits are invniably found near the surface of the earth, it may be mentioned that all the countries which were at first noied as gold producers, have finally given up their gold and only retain prominence as silver countries. The most conspicuous examples are I'eru and .Mexico. When they first became know n to the Spaniards they were incon ceivable rich in gold. After being worked for nearly 400 years they lve become destitute of gold and furnish only silver. It thus seems to be entirely possible to exhaust the gold deposits, and, so far as known, it baa been done in all the region from l'eru north to Mexico, w hilo the process of exhaustion is going on in North America and Australia. I'uless some fresh dis coveries shall be made in Alaska or Greeuland, or in Patagonia, the time is not far distant when the gold supplies of the new world w ill have been worked out. Luroe and Asia are not likely to furnish any fresh find, and the only hope for the gold hunters is in Af'ica As an evidence of the futility of expecting gold discoveries from any deed borings it U only neces sary to examine a little the condi tions' under which gold occurs on the surface. It iuyariabty occurs in being of quart and granite w hich have been cast up from very great depths. Often a range of mountains containing gold-bear ing veins shows that it has been forced through bodies of rock and earth hundreds of miles thick. This matter which was displaced by the granite pushing its way from below has had its layers or strata disrupted to such a degree that they are turned up one edge and thus the limestone, slate and a.indstone stratification that once overlaid the grarite to the thick ness of hundred of miles ia so placed that its once vertical depth can be plainly measured horizon tally. But in all this rock no gold is found until it is reached in the quartz and granite which came up from vast depths below. Gold ia only. found in ridgea and rauges of mountains which traverse the globe in a northerly and southerly direction; but never in those which run east and west. Whether under the theory that the earth was once a globe or spheroid of molten matter, that the centrifugal forces and the shrinkage of the polar extremes produced convulsions which raised the meridional ranges from a greater depth then was the case with the latitudinal ridges, or whether the former were made when the matter was more fluid and was most subject to the forces which would operate upon a re volving spheroid, cannot be defi nitely declared, but nature baa some sufficient cause for an estab lished fact. In such a molten body tire heaviest materiQwould be certain to settle at the center of volume. Gold ia nearly 20 times as heavy as water. In more care fully stated terms it ia 19.3 times as heavy as water and platinum is -1.5 times as heavy. The gold and platinum melted together would make a body whose specific gravity, that is, its weight, com pared with that of water, would be 10.2. The average ipecific gravity of the earth is about 5. If we may assume that the various substances, in a molten state, are arranged in the earth according to their specific weights and densi ties, we will be safe in concluding that gold and platinum are at the center of the earth, and make up its heart, and we must bore many thousands of miles before reach ing it. A body of the precious metals 2,000 miles in diameter re mains hidden there until some titanic convulsions, which will rend the planet and change the relative places of sea and land, shall cast up the froth of this in ternal ocean of fiery gold and place it in the reach of the men who may be spared to enjoy it.
