In no field of human endeavor has bo much been accomplished and so great an activity displayed, as in that of invention. Our laws and practices now lend the utmost encouragement to that avocation, and it is claimed that modern times have originated the vast majority of these works. The Troy Times, however, collates data to show tnat such is not the case, we speak of the art of piinting as modern. But the Romans used movable types to mark their pot ter and indorse their books. Mr. Layard found in Nineveh a mag nificent lens of rock crystal, which Sir D. Brewster considers a true optical lens and the origin of the microscope. The principle of . the stereoscope, invented by Professor Wheating, was known to Euclid, described by Galen, 1,500 years ago and more fully in 1599 A. D. in the works of Baptista Porta The Thames tunnel at London, and later that at Chicago, were antici pated by one under the Euphrates i at Babylon, and the Egyptians had a Sues canal thousands of years before the present waterway I was built. 8uch examples might I be indefinitely multiplied; but turning to photography, ' M. Joharh, in his "Xeuvelles inven tion aux Expositions Univer Belles," 1856, says a translation front Uerman was discovered in Russia, 300 years old, which con tains the clear explanation of photography. The old alchemists understood the properties of chloride of silver in relation to light, and its photographic action is explained by Fabricius in "De Rubus . Metallicis," 1506. The daguerreotype process was antici pated by De 1a Roche in his "Giphantie," 1760, Hough it was 'only the statement 'of a dreamer. The use of cork for iuakirg jackets as an aid in swimming, and now familiar to ocean travelers in the so-called life-preservers with which steam ers are equipped, is very old. A Roman sent by Camillus to the capital and who had to swinl the Tiber to evade the besieging Gauls, wore cork under his attire in order that he might float. The pyramids of Egypt and the foundation walls of the temple at Jerusalem contain stones of such size and weignt that it is hardly possible for them to have been put in place without mechanical power equal to aiy now known. Was it steam that supplied this power, or was it ' some device which has now be come "a lost art?" Perhaps they had their Edisons, their Wattses and their Stephensons ii those days, who, like the builders of the tabernacle in the wilderness, were cunning workmen, equal to any emergency, but who when the need of their services no 1 nger existed dropped back into modest obscurity. It may be, also, that the patent system of the ancients did not encourage the development of inventive genius. Nw when a man invents a really useful article his fame and fortune are fairly well assured. It was not so then. A Roman architect discovered the means of altering the nature of glass and making it a malleable. He produced all the Ri malleable glass which Emperor Tiberius desired, and then, to pre vent the secret becoiu1 Jnown , the monarch cut off the inventor's head. So late as fie reign of Louis XIII. a similar discovery was made. But Cardial Riche lieu was afraid that it wsuld injure the French glass manufacturers, of whose profits, after the style of government "paternalism" then in vogue, the prime minister prob ably had a liberal share; so the man witn a too-inquiring mind was put in prison and ther re mained all his life. That sort of thing was not calculated to send men on exploring expeditions into the "dim unknown." and Edison and his guild bad they lired then would hardly have found a profitable field for their inventive talents. Tub immensity of India, whie h is understoood to be the rival of this country in the production of wheat, is hardly understood. The census of British India was taken on February 26, by nearlr a mil lion enumerators. According to the London Times, the population was found to be nearly 286,000,000, of whom 220,500,000 live in British territory, and 65,500,000 under feudatory governments. The in crease during the past decade has been 26,000,000, or 29.900.000 if newly acquired districts be in cluded. The density of population is 474 to a square mile in Bengal, 442 in the Northwestern Provinces, and 248 in Madras. It seems that the Mormon saints have not abandoned polygamy as they promised and pretend to do, but still practice and preach. A colony in Mexico, come back occasionally to Utah to procure more wives, and are practically living, polygamous lives all the. time. The report of Captain Symons upon the improvements of the bar at Yaquina, givs a very satit factory showing, aad demonstrates the efficiency of work going on there. It is to be hoped that the work will be kept up and made permanent. French Taney Wafer.
