A dispatch to tne Hkk ai.h from Yaquina says that at a meeting of the employes of the O. P. li. K. held at YaquinaM&st night it was unanimously decided to place their cause in the hands of Hon. Geo. It was also decided that no talk or thought of a strike would be tolerated and that the company's property would be resected as their own. It is understood tliat the matter will be pushed along as speedily as possible. It gives just as great advantages as any school in the state. The fall term will open on September 0, under the most favorable auspices. The old teachers, who have done such good work for the school, will all remain, excepting Prof. II. M. McKee, who will be succeeded in the commercial department by Prof. W. W. Bailey, recently of the State Agricultural College of Texas. Prof. Bailey was recently united in marriage to Miss Kittie Cooley, of Brownsville, and has accepted the position in order to be among her people. He is well spoken ol as a thorough instructor. Prof. David Torbit, recently of the San tiam Academy of Lebauon, has been added to the faculty. He is an educator of ability. Tae college is now stronger than ever and deserves tho liberal patronage it has been receiving. A bunt Hie Insurance. There seems to be an error in the statement that only foreigu insurance companies lost in the reeeut Lebanon tire, for one of Julius Gradw hoi's companies, the Oakland Home, paid Wednesday to Mr. Bach, the full value of his loss in that company to his entire satisfaction, which seems to be the usual custom of Mr. Grad whol's companies to pay promptly their lull loses as soon as they occur. Therefore it you want to insure your property well go to Mr. Gradwhol, who represents six No.-l insurance companies with a capital of a hundred million dollars. Waiting for Industry. There is untold wealth lying at the very feet of the citizens of Newport, in the cod fisheries, if only they choose to reach lor it. Almost any quantity of this fish may te caught here, and yet not one city in the valley is supplied witii Newport fish. It ia a mam moth industry, which lacks only energy to develop. For the time being cold storage is the only necessary outlay of capital, and being had, the industry will pay for its own upbuilding and im provements. It would be nr transient s(eculation, but w .i' I be right here year in and year out. Corvallis Garotte. A Motherly Rooster. Stories about bears having been seen in the berry patches in the Green Basin region have been rife for some time. A party of ladies, in company with L. F. Wilsony-first ran onto a large brown specimen, which was not disposed tol get out of the way at all, and so liiey gave him a wide berth und parted company. Last Sunday the workmen at the Greeu Basin Lumbering Co.'s mill and others, to the number of a dozen and a half, organized a hunt and scoured the hills. They succeeded in scaring up three, which they wounded but did not kill, and the bears escaped in the deep canyon of Line creek. John Miller scared up the same brown bear that had formerly been seen, and being armed only with a re volver, blaed away with that, wounding bruin but doing no serious damage to his bearahip. Ou Tuesday Mr. .Miller took another hunt and succeeded in bringing down a large black bear, close by the mountain home of the senior editor of the H kkai.d. Of course the party of ladies, who are spending a few weeks at the place with Mrs. Train and Arlene, Misses Maggie and Nettie Whit ney, Miss Dell Brumley and Miss Ellen Branuan, were much inter ested in the proceedings, and viewed the bear's carcass as it was carried by the house on men's shoulders with considerable curiosity. Sundry nierrentoes in the shape of bear's claws taken from the immense pedal extrem ities were secured, not to speak of bear steak. Mountain life brings some exciting scenes as well as rainy days. Newton ISeerx' Lout in LoikIou. The gifted actor, Newton Beers, will hold the boards on next Saturday night when a grand per formance of the great master piece of melodrama, "Lost in London," will be put on. The play, although not a new one, possesses a beauty and wholesouiencss thst can be seen again and again with reneweJ interest, just as one can turn to some rare book by an old master and find there interest and beauty that has escaped him be fore. Mr. Beers has produced "Lost in lxmdon" in nearly every city in the United States and Canada and has played the lead ing role of Job Arinroyd over four thousand times. Tue principal scenes in this production are. Act I. Home of the Smart King; Act II. Heart of Blackmore; Act HI. Featherstone's London Vil la; Act IV. Streets of London; Act VI Cottage near London ; Apothesis. Job's Vision. Seats now on sa e. Tueeday evening Edward Whit lock, serving a two-year terra in the penitentiary for the crime of burglary from Coos county, eseaed from prison.. lie was a trusty and had been gone nan an hour before being missed. A reward of $50 is otlered for his re-turn to the prison. Charles Fads recently had an encounter with a grizzly hear near Summit Prairie, Grant Co. He dismounted his animal to slay bis bearahip, but was delighted to resume his saddle after badly wounding the animal. The second shot changed the scene and the bear reoaired to thetbicKet. X theJhg in the DIGGING FOR COAL. Men Working Kight aid Day on the Dis covery at Spring Mill. Mr. P. H. Bowman, of Spring 1, tnree lanes below Albany on thevBentou county side, iras in thejty yesterday. It is upon his larh that the recent coal dis coveries1 were made, w hich promise to result in the uncovering of val uable coal deposits. Two distinct veins of coal nave been found, and M r.'-J5owm:in bought a quantity of it to tins city yesterday and had it tested in a blacksmith's forge. Messrl. Johnson & Morris wko tested it, pronounced it a fine quality of steam or heating coal. The samples taken out are from the surface and having oeen sub mitted for ages to the action of the elements are naturally soft. The extent and character of the coal deeper down is not yet fully ascertained, but two shifts of men are now working night and day in a tunnel and sinking a shaft, with every prospect of satisfactory re sults. A year or two ago an experienced coal mines and expert bom the Pennsylvania oil fiejd visited the Spring Hill region and explored that vicinity for several days. He said there was every indication of both coal and oil there, and sug gcs'.ed that it would be profitable to expend work enough to ascertain definitely the extent of the deposit. This the owners of the mine are now doing. Their work has been retarded somewhat by inflowing water, but this they are overcom ing and expect to have more definite results from their work in a short t me. They have found coal of good quality and are con fident that it exists in paying quantities. If such proves true, it would be a valuable addition to the industries of this portion of Oregon. The District J uriceshlp. There is said to be quite a fight "brewing" between Judge R. P. Boise and George 11. Burnett, Esq. both of Salem, for the republican nomination for circuit judge of this district. ' They might com promise and yield the nomination to an Albany man. Hon. II. II. Hewitt of this city would grace the bench anJ fill the ofhVe in a way satisfactory to everybody. A Good Yield. Sol King tales first water in getting his yearfs wheat to Benton Co.
