Thamm of Dusseldorf lias issued a report to the effect that he lias managed ly the Koch system to bring alout a complete cure in 10 per cent of the cases of tuber culosis which he has treated, and that satisfactory results occurred jin 43 per cent of the other cases treated by the game system. The history of the Koch remedy is a tvpleal one savs the San Francisco Chronicle. The excite ment which prevailed over the civilied world when the announce ment of the discovery was ma le was soon followed by a miction and a feeling of general distrust. It had been assumed that 1'rofessor Koch had declared his discovery a certain cure for tuberculosis, and when it was found that there wen cases which did not yield to the treatment the remedy was violent ly denounced as a humbug, and Koch assailed a3 a uiack ana a charlatan. Manifest injustice has been done to Koch in this matter. II is secret was dragged from him be fore he was ready to make it public; unskilled practitioners undertook to make use of it ; ex treme cases were used as tests, anil simulated preparationa v ere foisted on the public as the genuine remedy. What vonder, then, that the remedy did not succeed or that Koch was declared to be an ignorant, presumptuous ipiack? The probabilities are that the genuine remedy, used in the riu'ht way and applied under proper conditions, w ill be found to possess valuable therapeutic qualities; but that it is a sovereign cine for tuber culosis is hardly within the range of possibility, nor did Koch him selt ever make any suih claim for it. The number of specifics is very small at best, as every in telligent person knows and eyery physician will freely admit it, and to say -that every case ofl consumption is curable byaJyi means or remedy is to assertnot ! only a miracle, but an imgei1 TUADE IS Ml'i.-'jyya. It is gratifying to note the im- j provement in the condition of business and trade throughout the , country. Bradstreet's reports indicate a growing effect of the increased activity in staple lines, due to the anticipation of wants during the ; autumn. Crop reports are most satisfac tory, railroad traffic is increasing, and the old w hich lias been ex torted in such large amounts will soon beyiu to come back in pay for grain. ' The w heat outlook tiirougiioiii mis coiintrv is exce: lent, and trade gcnvtaMy is re viving. Tiie following is last Sunday's New York Herald's financial arti cle: 'The movement of currency to the west has fairly begun, but h.is not yet reached very large proiortioni, as it is evident from the increase of surplus reserve with city hanks shown by jester day's ttatement. It does uot, of course, rellect the $l,-"i00,0(H. gold exported yeetenhiy luoruing. The treasury machinery has been util ized for the transfer of $l,ti7i),iMiO cmreiu y d-iring the week to Cin cinnati ami Chicago, and at hitter paint New York ftiudcare now at a discount of M per $1,000, a rate which indicates a bharp tlllux irom this center. The movement of grain already p resents some new features. Recent talk of direct exerts ot grain from Texas to Europe has crystallized in the engagement of fo,noj bushels of wheatfromUalvisu.il next week direct to Coik. New Orleans ia prepared for a heavy export trade, flail the barge line from St. ljuis to that port has cont .'or every boat up to November i. At San Francisco more than three hun dred and fifty vessels are under charter to load with grain. Two of these are for South America and one for Australian colonies, a fact which is supposed to indicate a shortage there." The sky of Europe ie black with rumors of serious complications. There is little danger of ar, but while Russia and France are patching up an alliance and foreign nations generally are engaged in bluffing each other the people ef this country are industriously har vesting big crops and we can afford to keep in good humor as the markets for our products abroad are strengthened by all such bellicose demonstrations. The Albany fairgrounds should be improved, and a county fair inaugurated. Linn county has some of the best horses in the state, and the other fine stock and agricultural products ought to be put on exhibition where they can be seen by the public. They can not be excelled, and are a stand ing advertisement of the wonderful resources of the great Willamette Valley whenever ex posed to view. The collision in Japanese waters w hich sent 200 men to their death is the greatest disaster that has happened in the Orient since the foundering of the Turkish frigate Ertougroul. In this recent case it is plain that a panic seized upon passengers and crew, and in the confusion many lives were need lessly waited. The volume of business iu the various avenues of trade in Albany is now a steadily increasing quantity. HUMPHREYS' 1R.
