The City Council Stonld lake FavoraMe Act'eD on Tkij Subject. . Albanv's streets should be numbered. Recorder J. N. Ilen tou has received a proposion fiom Roberts Hroe..of Racine, Wi-consir, ottering to furnish the names ot streets on solid iron cards, and the matter will be considered l y the city council. The iiosting o! the names and number of streets in a city the size of Albany is very essential. You will not find one' citizen in ten who knows the names and location of one-third the streets in this city and for a stranger to find a given location is almost as hopeless a task as it would be to guide a ship without a rudder. Let the city council take favor able action on this subject! The expense would be small, while the benefits that would accrue therefrom would be large indeed. Albany is perhaps, the only city in the state of 7000 population without this much-needed im provement. REAL ESTATE TRANSFERS. Jarvis AI. One who has made a thor ougb inspection tells The Dalles Chronicle: .More work lias been done and more real progress made during the past six months than ever took place in the same length of time before. The masonrv of the south side of the lower gate is all finished but the coping, and it is the finest piece of work I ever saw. Further inquiry elicited the following: At present fifty stonecutters are employed, about fifty laborers and twenty more who are working m the ijuarry. Soon the water will be low enough to allow the canal to he pumped out and then the work will begin on the north side of the gate. After the gate is finished work can go on at any stage of the water. This is cheering news to the people of Eastern Oregon, whose patience in waiting for the completion of this improvement has been many times nearly exhausted. Cratn'a Lnrlallel Atlat, The new edition of this unrivall ed work is now being delivered bv Ihe agent, Airs. A. M. Talt. I t-hriek of the steam whistle is abroad in the land. The yield is fully up to expectations. KILLED BY A TEAM. Skull Crushed by the Brake Beam Un derneath the Wagon. Yesterday a terrible tragedy oc curred at the farm of Wililam Alespelt, near Scio, caused by a runaway team, and resulting in the death of Peter Halfpenny. He, with his partner, F. E. Mann, were engaged in baling hay and had just moved the baling machine Uon the Alespelt place. Halfpenny had the horses hitched the wago'n to come to Albany to procure some baling wire. He started to remove the halters from the, horses heads, anil in order to do it had to take off the bridles. As soon as they were removed the horses lunged forward, knocking Air. Halfjienny down and running over him. The forward wheels paa ed him harmlessly, but he must have raked his head 'then, for the cross bar under the reach, carrying the brakes, struck him on the head and crushed the skull. This is known from the fact that hair wa found adhering to the bar. He lived but a few moments. Air. Halfpenny was a sober, in dustrious, hard working man, and highly respected by all who knew him. He was single and had no relatives on this coast. A brother and other relatives, we are in formed, live in Wisconsin, from which state he came. He was about 40 years oid. The funeral will be attended to day from the Catholic church in this city. The Astoria Hailroad. The Oregonian savs: Hon. C. W. Fulton, of Astoria, was at the Portland yesterday. He is dis posed to view the newly formulat ed pioject of building a railroad from Hunters to Astoria an likelv to be carried to completion. He says the personnel of its promoters is such as to inspire commence. Mr. Fulton's idea is that a railroad to Astoria would help both that city and Portland. It would help this city by insuring the outgoing commerce of the inland empire for the Columbia, the bulk of which would" continue to be handled by Portland capital. To Astoria it would bring very great advantages: partly on account of the increased wheat trade, but much more by reason of the mar kets it would o'en up East for fish and lumber. The A'tjriana naturally feel that with direct railway communication to the Eaetern Northwest they might easily supply a large proportion of the lumber of that region. As it is now this industry, with an tin limited supply of unsurpassed timber, it is handicapped to the last degree by the extra expense entailed in handling the product ot its mills again in Portland, an item which very largely enters into the cost of that commodity, the company is to meet to-morrow to perfect organization. A Cunning Tramp, People in Portland enjoy a joke on a man wtio was distributing samples the other day. He went into every store on his side of the street, leaving there a tsmnil piece of tobacco to be Eampled As the disburser entered the store a seedy looking man went into the one inimediatly behind this one, and while the man who was giving away the tobacco came forth each time with one less piece, he who followed him came out with his store increased by one of the samples. A good deal of quiet laughing was done at the expense of the agent. No doubt when the dav was over the dispenser of tobacco felt satisfied that he had faithfully served bis employers There is no doubt that the tramp was content, for he had tobacco enongb to last him for many days. More Camping. An effort is being made to secure more militia service during the state fair, by having a three days encampment in Salem at that time. -A Salem rejKirt says that it is not likely that the Second Kegi ment. O. N. G., will go into en campment here three days during the week ot the lair. Uolonel Lovell says it'will take about J 100 a dav for substance tor the men. and if this sum can be raised the encampment. is assured. The boyi want luthtr instruction, the six companies of Alarion and Linn counties are anxious for it, as are also the other com pa nine of the regiment. A New IiultiHtry, Eugene Register: A new in dustry has been opened here, that of gathering and shipping the roots of the wild grape. Air. S. II. Fiiendly has twelve large bales of these roots at the depot and they are to be shipped to a wholesale drug lirm in lletroit. Ali'-higan, and used in making medicine. A large amount of these roots can be obtained in this immediate vicinity. Mr. Friendly has also purchased three or four car loads ot chiltem bark. which will also be shipped in a few days to the same place and be used for the same purpose. Another Big Kuttler. Zebe Morse can see Charley Carlson's big rattlesnake and go him several better, lie claims to have killed at Seven .Mile, on .Mc Kay creek, a mammoth rattler with twenty-one buttons. Williams, widely known throughtont North western Ohio as a big lumber dealer, was leading a dual life, and that he was keeping up two establishments, one in this city and the other in Fostoria, only fifteen miles away. By many people his home was supposed to be in Fostoria, where lie has a wife and two children, while br others he was considered a Find lay man, as he has a bouse and wife here. The wives knew nothing of his double life, as bis business kept him on the road much of the time, until linacnial reverses growing out this mode 'of living at hist brought him into court. Williams was present in court this morning when the case was begun, but the officers could not find him this afternoon, and he is supposed to have tied the city, leaving his wives and creditors to settle his affairs as best they caw.
