about a circus ring since he was a
boy of seven.
X. H. Allen, a retired merchant
and manager and principal owner
of the Albanv electric light sys
tern, was at the da pot yesterday
with bis daughter. Miss hdna, on
their way to the Klamath Hot
Springs. Mrs. J. H. Mc Bride and
daughter, Miss Susie Martin, and
O. 11. Blount, old Albany friends,
were at the station to meet them.
Valley Record, Ashland.
A clergyman who did not get on
well with tie congregation was ap
pointed chaplain of a penitentiary,
and preached a farewell sermon to
his congregation. There was
nothing in the sermon at which
anybody could take offense, but
some of the members did not like
the text, which was: "I go to
prepare a place for you, so that
where I am ye may be also."
A census bulletin just issued is
devoted to educational statistics.
Il is learned that Oregon's per
cent, of change in population from
1880 to 18'J0 was 70.5.5, while the
per cent of gain in public school
enrollment was (9.23. In Oregon
the relation of sexes in public
schools is as mile teachers to
female teachers as 1 to 1.3; male
pupils to female pupils nearly as
10 to y.G. The enrollment at
night school in Oregon is 200.
O. C. Cone brought in a sample
of his hops this wek, says the
Stay ton Times. The burr has not
yet formed but the growth of
vines is the heaviest we have ever
seen. The hop lice are plentiful
on the leaves but as yet have done
no damage. Mr. Cone has some
fears that their crop ill yet sutler
from the lice after the burr is
formed. The Cone buys have tht
second largest crop in the state, 00
acres, and will realize a handsome
um if the lice do not destroy their
crop.

Also that an eighteen inch sewer
be constructed on the east side of
Ferry street, beginning at the Wil
lamette rivtr and running to a
point midway between Eleventh
and Twelfth streets. Also that a
fiiteen inch Bewer be built on
Madison street, lieginning at the
Willamette river and running to a
point midway between Eighth and
Ninth streets. The recommenda
tions of the committee were
a lopted and surveyor ordered to
make a profile and report at the
next regular meeting of the coun
cil. A number of resolutions were
read and adopted.
The matter of abating certaiu
nuisances was referred to the com
mittee on health and police.
The application of Pat Fennell
for beer license was laid over until
the next meeting.
The contract of S. W. Ross for
removing certain dirt on Cala
pooia street was annulled.
All property south of Third
street on Calapooia street was
ordered graded and graveled and
the square at the intersection of
Third and Calapooia streets sloped
off, making an easy grade.

The postoflice inspector visited
Postmaster Thomas Monteith yes
terday and found everything run
ning smoothly. Mr. Monteith has
received a letter from the postal
department asking the suggestion
of a suitable name for a new post
oflice soon to be established in the
Santiam mines. A daily mail ser
vice is now in operation between
this city and Rock Creek and Shel
burn. I'uahlng Ahead.
The S. P. R. R. Co. have fin
ished the track and large bridge
crossing the McKenzie river to
Springfield, and are now pushing
ahead in an easterly direction to
Jasper. A large force of China
men are employed grading the
way and shoveling gravel along
the line, which is being put in
first class condition.
From Far Africa.
Miss Lizzie McNeil, who has
done such excellent work in Africa
under Bishop Taylor, is expected
to be at home in Albanv on the
2.)th of this month. We under
stand that she expects to return
to Africa after she has taken the
necessary time in this country for
recuperation.

for the construction of a railroad
spur to the Siskiyou stone Co's
quirry. Mr. Ay res says the Ash
land stone has knocked Tcuino

only competitor now is the Arizona
stone. Among the latest big con
tracts the Siskiyou Stone Co., ban
received is that of the $300,000
building of Ed. Dekuin, which
will be the handsomest business
block in Portland. The stone con
tract bids for the Portland's
chamber of commerce will be
opened to-day, w hich the Siskiyou
stone Co., expect to receive.
