A clergyman who did not get on well with tie congregation was ap pointed chaplain of a penitentiary, and preached a farewell sermon to his congregation. There was nothing in the sermon at which anybody could take offense, but some of the members did not like the text, which was: "I go to prepare a place for you, so that where I am ye may be also." A census bulletin just issued is devoted to educational statistics. Il is learned that Oregon's per cent, of change in population from 1880 to 18'J0 was 70.5.5, while the per cent of gain in public school enrollment was (9.23. In Oregon the relation of sexes in public schools is as mile teachers to female teachers as 1 to 1.3; male pupils to female pupils nearly as 10 to y.G. The enrollment at night school in Oregon is 200. O. C. Cone brought in a sample of his hops this wek, says the Stay ton Times. The burr has not yet formed but the growth of vines is the heaviest we have ever seen. The hop lice are plentiful on the leaves but as yet have done no damage. Mr. Cone has some fears that their crop ill yet sutler from the lice after the burr is formed. The Cone buys have tht second largest crop in the state, 00 acres, and will realize a handsome um if the lice do not destroy their crop. THE CITY COUNCIL. The recommenda tions of the committee were a lopted and surveyor ordered to make a profile and report at the next regular meeting of the coun cil. A number of resolutions were read and adopted. The matter of abating certaiu nuisances was referred to the com mittee on health and police. The application of Pat Fennell for beer license was laid over until the next meeting. The contract of S. W. Ross for removing certain dirt on Cala pooia street was annulled. All property south of Third street on Calapooia street was ordered graded and graveled and the square at the intersection of Third and Calapooia streets sloped off, making an easy grade.
