public instruction, a beautdul
gold-headed cane. As Professor
McElroy was sick at his residence
in Salem, Prof. B. J. IIathorne,

ceived the cane for him, and ap

P. Horner, and F. K'gler, a
committee to present it to Air.

Oil Tank And Warelmuxe.
The Stndard Oil Company have
put themselves in shape to handle
oil with a minimum amount
of lisk in this city. They have
erected a warehousj near the
.southern Pacitic line on Ellsworth
street, supplied with an immense
tank, and yesterday inaugurated
the business of supplying the
stores with oil from a tank on
wheels from the supply house. It
makes the risk comparatively
none.

J. II. Proctor, a blacksmith, for
merly of Harrist'iirg, disappeared
from Alarshtield several weeks ago.
The remains were found in t lie
woods by some hunters last Satur
day, partly eaten by. wild animals.
In the pockets of nis clothes were
half a dozen means of indcntilica
tion. He was a drinking man,
and shortly before hisdisapearauce
his wife and her children left him
and went to Cottaw tiroce to her
parents. It is believed he com
mitted suicide.
