FulKht....... .' 11.13pm '-12. 20 pm 3.1opm',7.45 a m Tue indomitable prejudice and superstition of the Mongolian is exhibited by the attack recently made upon the missions in that country. It is said that the old and absurd charge that foreign missionaries in China kid nap native children and extract their eyes for medicine was actu ally revived recently, -and formed the cause of the lierce cttack on the French Catholic mission at Wuhu. Some natives evidently kidnaped two Chinese children and the parents, after vainly dc - manding their lost offspring at the mission, stirred up the populace until a mob was formed that looted and burned the eatheJ'al and all the mission buildings. Of course idemnity will be demanded and it will be paid by the Chinese government, but the incident is suggestive, as it shows that forty years' intercourse with the for eigner has done comparatively nothing toward removing the sensalesa Mongolian prejudice against foreigners. The matter of the tariff on tin plate advancing the price of that article, the evidence is now in a contrary direction. A firm ef London merchants write to the Welch manufactories as follows: "The best and only countennove to the McKinley Tariff is to reduce and not raise prices. To enable the manufacture of tin plates to be carried on in the United States, with their high ratio of values, a margin of profit must be created, and the object of the new taritf is clearly to provide that margin. Employers and employed in this old country should combine to de stroy that artificial margin and not to make it more effective." If the advice of that letter is followed prices on tin-plate will be reduced as will be seen. Where then will the poor laborers tin cup argu ment come in. A keci'liak Italian immigrant was landed in New York last week. The steamship lines are now assisting the officials in ex cluding improper immigrants, and the examination is strict. This particular individual was passed all right, but the next day he re turned and confessed that he had lied, to the question as to whether he had ever been in prison. He now acknowledges that several years ago he had allowed his angry passions to arise and gotten into a fight with another man, for which lie was incarcerated two days in jail. It is needless to say that he was allowed to stay, as he promised never to fight any more. The assertion that it will be necessary to have a national con ference, of all of the leading nations, to restore bi-raetalism, it is said originates solely with the men, who are still clamoring for a single gold standard. To the un biased thinker upon the subject there is no apparent reason to hinder this government from con trolling its own monetary affairs by making gold and silver equally the standards of the measure of the circulating medium. Oik new tariff regulations do not seem to have demoralized the export trade to any great extent. Bradstreet notices the fact that for nine months of the present fiscal year our exports of cotton goods have been valued at $8,453,004, or $2,390,849 more than for the same time last year. Two-thirds of this time was under the new regula tions so that it is a criterion to go by. The Salvation army circles in San Francisco are active just now, and on the qui vive, by the arrival of (ien. Booth and his efficient adjutant hia wife in that city. They are the acknowledged lead era of this peculiar religious denomination. 1 The attraction3 at the Worlds Fair at Chicago continue to grow in interest and importance. It is said that the exhibit of the agri cultural experiment stations of the United States promises to be not one of the least interesting fea tures of the Chicago exposition. One portion of the proposed ex hibit, which will be likely to attract general attention, is an experiment station in operation, with its office, laboratories, etc., illustrating how the indoor work of a station is actually carried on. In another portion of the exhibit each station will present, by means of maps, diagrams, pictures, sets of publications, etc., a full statement of its location, equip ment, lines of work, etc., so that the visitor can, if he desires, follow oat in detail the history and the work of any particular station. At Rockford, 111., the Methodist church passed resolutions to boy cott a park and a steamboat called the Arrow because a base ball club, on Sunday, had played in one riding to it in the other. The base ballists retaliated by getting up a boycott on the church which is likely to break up a pro posed revival meeting. The use of the devils tools does not always assist church matters. Ins bweiiish government is fighting to keep their population at home. It is said that 250,000 young men left that country last year for foreign parts. This is a i heavy draw upon their most de sirable citizens and it behooves them to look after it. That class of citizens, too, is just the ones that this and other countries wirih to encourage as immigrants. Canada is still discussing the subject of reciprocity with this countiy, with the evident desire to have it consumated. The ad vantages to accrue to her in meas urea of that nature are too evident to be overlooked. Her business requires it. Sam Goetz's fancy pastry, cakes and bread, fresh every morning, at Allen Bros.
