In all the natural resources thai minister to the wants of man, such a3 timber, coal and gas, man kind exhibit a cart-lets prodigiiliiy that is truly surprising. The forests of the world are ruthlessly destroyed often wantonly so. In relation to coal and ga, the Age of Steel says that of the character idti j features of modern life is its tremendous industrial energy ar.d a corresponding abuse of natural resources. In mineral, oils and gases we have been constantly adding to our discoveries of stock in hand, and with seemingly in exhaustible supplies stowed away in the subterranean cellars of the hemisphere the idea of economic use has not very generally troubled the industrial braid. In no one phase lias it been more prominent than in the wild vtatte of natural gas. The traveler may see in some localities the exuber ant flare of street lights burnin by day as well as night, and for at least twelve hours in twenty-four an absolute an I unreasonable waste of heat and light. In some localities, for purposes of exhibi tion or amusement and the fun of blinking one's eyes at a modern phenomenon, gas wells are ignited and fountains of flame playing in space from 80 to 10J feet high are evidence of modern prodigality. All this involves an enormous con sumption of a valuable but limited natural resource, the per manency of which is extremely doubtful, and its service in ir dus trial development of such import ance as to make it economic use a public necessity. Experience demonstrates that the subterran ean reservoirs are not perennial, and that the pressure usually en countered in new wells gradually decreases as internal supplies are exhausted. The money invested and the industrial interests in volved are of sufficient magnitude to justify any nietho'i tending to restrict unreasonable vate and to conserve anil invaluable industrial agent. All natural le-ources aie limited. Iu some, as in coal, the exhaustion is slow, but it is, nevertheless, gradinl and certain. The coal deposits in Great LVitiun have been exhumed to ench an extent that the dilficulties iu rail ing are adding to the cost of the ptoduct and making what was once a national industry les-s and less so year by year. A few gen erations of men can practically exhaust the product of a million years, afiid consign to posterity an unnecessary overty of material. History is not without its ex amples. The treeless wastes of Western Asia were once populous with semi-civilized nations and empires, who have left behind them a big graveyard and a w ild erness. It is true that modern science ia every day adding to our skill in making use of one agent as another disappears, but in no sense can human ingenuity justify tue abuse of natural forces, or save a nation or an age from the in evitable penalty of indisciimii.ate waste. PROTECT I NO THE SEALS. An agreement lias been con eluded between the United states and Great Britain by which the two powers are to unite in prohi biting the killing of fur seals in the eaatern half of 15th ring sea until May, 18lJ, the only excep tion being that 75D may he killed during that tiaie by the lessees of the United States government.. If the two nations act promptly and in good faith, as will undoubt edly be the case, the protection to the fur peals during the present season will be ample and ade quate. The only serious dangei has been from Iiiitish Columbian sealers, with their methods of pelagic sealing, and these will. very shortly be brough to an end by the united eifrrU of American and English cruisers, which will be ser.t into Uehring sea as fast as sail and steam can carry them. The preamble of f.iis agreemen'; indicates that it is not to be deemed in anywise conclusive of the ultimate ijuestion of jurisdic tion over Ueh ring sea. It recites that the agreement has been made for the purpose of avoiding irrita ting differences anl with a view to promote the friendly settlement of the questions pending between the two governments, and to preserve the seal species, and expressly de clares that it is made without pre judice to the rights or claims of either party. Thi3 agreement will be eminent ly satisfactory to everybody ex cept the seal poachers, who would be w illing to see an international war provided they could secure a few hundred seal skins before h ;s tilities should begin. Our Victor ian friends who have invested so liberally in sealing outfits will be seriously displeased at the i'gree ment, but it will meet the wishes of l he people of tne United Males and of Great Ifritain, and the seal poachers will haveto contend them selves with their ill-gotten gains of previous years. Tiik republicans of the country will receive with piofound satis faction the greeting which Ohio sends to them. The ring'ng declarations of the platform, and the nominations, even more forci bly than the platform, give assur ance that neither republican principles nor republic spirit were shaken by the political storm of last November. There has been some reason to fear a want of the old-time courage, and because of this fear the doings at Columbus are especially gratifying.
