The local journals now supply the sequel to a mysterious abduc tion case which made eome sensa tion in their columns early i 1 the last decade, says a letter from Odessa. Between eight and nine years ago a young j,irl named Anna Prokofyed", then 10 years of age and remarkable for personal attractions, suddenly disappeared 181)1 from her widowed mother's house in that city. The most searching implies were fruitlessly prosecuted by the police and by the friends ot the missing girl, whose mother Jied two years ago in total ignor ance of her daughter's fate. It now transpires that after her abduction Anna lVokolyefl' was secretly carried to Constantinople and eventually sold to a Satonica merchant, in whose harem she remained until the recent death of her owner. From intelligence now received hereby ftiends of ihe late Mine, I'rokoiyeH' it would appear that Anna was from the lirst treated w ith uniform kindness by the Salonica merchant, w bo at his death, bequeathed to bis favor ite slave the w hole of his property, consisting of f)or houses in Salonica, five trading schooners and 5000 Tut ki h pounds. The fair legatee, now only in her twertv-fifih vear and sttll pof-se sing her remarkable youthful beauty scarcely im paired, lias placed her two boys under the educational training of the Russian monks of Mount A h s, and to their abbot sue ha pn-sert 1 me f Ler schooners. Snow Walls ICesist Cannon Kails. A short time ayro experiments were ma le in Russia, at the sug gestion of a German engineer, as to the resisting power of snow walls against artillery. Two walls of snow were bu It up and fired against at a distance of 000 yards by Held artillery. The balls pene trated to a distance of only eigh teen feet into the wal's. Of course, in case of war, the walls would not have to le built so thick, as the artillery would naturally be at a long range. The Russians have also been re cently trying infant' y firing at snow walls. The nien of the Kighty-first Apscberon Infantry Regiment, under the superin'end ence of General Count Borcf, built a wall about fifty feet long, eigh teen feet thick and four and a half feet high. Behind the wall were placed at equal intervals, four targets, at each of which four volleys were fired, at distances of SCO, 400, 200 and 10'J steps. The jienetiating powers of the volleys were at 100 step, 0 feet ; at 200 steps, 5 feet 7 'oches ; at -J JO steps, -1 feet 7 inches ; at SCO steps, 4 feet. This proves that in war operations during winter, snow could be used with great advant age as shelter for troops. Drowned in the Floods Gaixesv.i.i.e, Tex., June 11. Leon, I. A FEMALE MURDERER The Usprovokad Murder of an Aged Man. THE CAUSE OF THE SHOOTING The Victim Crawled 300 Tarda and Attracted the Attention of Seme School Children bj His Criei. Canvonvii.le, Or., June 11. Samuel L. The shot entered the lower part of the left shoulder and came out a little above and on the inside of the left nipple, inflicting an ugly wound. The tfjuse of the shooting, it seems, was that Booth and the woman had some words about some firewood that the old man had carefully collected and placed in the dooryard. Mrs. Booth, it appears, burned it up in a hea, whereupon Booth went into the house and complained to her iliont it. Mrs. Booth at once .'tabbed a gun and said: "Yon olds oi a b . I will kill you." I.ixjt li was standing near a parti tion door. He threw up his hands and said: 'My, God! don't sin t me," closing the door at the same time. Mrs. Booth shot through the door. Arrest of a Woman Who Has Keen Stealing Five Year, I .toN wood, June 11. A most re markable story of theft was brought to light lute last night by the ar rest of Mary Boulgie, of this place. For some time merchants have missed goods from their stores. Mary Boulgie, it appears, went to Davis & Fehrs' store yesterday and aked to have a piece of goods changed.
