Noltner, there is an editorial mention of the tin plate matter, in which it is averred that "the ruost diligent search has not yet been able to ascertain the whereabouts ol operative tin plate factories or the extent of their production, except S3 far as relates to a fanciful contri bution of American plate by Mr. Xeidiinghouse, of St. Louis, to two protectionist dinners." The tariff refonuers-for-politi-cal-purposes-only, have been reiterating statements like the above all the time, statements that are an insult to their monumental disregard for the entire truth. It is an insult to the reading public, to presuppose that it can be in fluenced by such clamorings for the production of costly and ex tensive factories in the interval oi time allotted. It is well known that these plants are of slow growth. Again the denial of the making of American tin in factories is arrent untruth. The Philadelphia Press says: "It is claimed upon an alleged investigation that the X. & G. Taylor Co. did not ; have any tin plate works, nor could the ; firm furnish any American tin plate. A further assertion was made that the company was' inak-j boasts of turning out as good tin plates as could be purchased across the water, in oider to bring trade for their imported material, and also correspondence which they could not otherwise procure. The Pres4, yesterday, took oc casion to investigate these reports. A visit was made to the works, at Front ami Laurel Streets. A gang of workers wee seen busily engaged in the manufacture of tin p'ate and the thoughts of probable illusion were speedily dispelled. The factory is a long, low brick building.. Along the east side ol ' the big open room were piles of ' blacic sheet iron. Adjacent to them weie other piles of shinnin tin plates in boxes and ready for pacV'ng. At the southern 'end of the building was a huge brick furnace w ith six fires. Above the itirnace was a large iron protector, placed there to carry oil' the fumes of the palm oil. Near by was the machinery used for stamping the sheets. Along the west wall was the "pickling" paraphernalia. . Two hours ot investigation pro duced a conviction beyond all doubt that tin plate, as line as any of European make, was certainly being manufactured. The brand . of tin that the company is making is the Taylor "Our Style" brand, and the impression stamped on every sheet show3 the brand, thicknes?, trade-mark and name (K. A (i. Taylor & Co., rhila.)" The Press then goes on at length to deaci'ile the piocess ol manu facture, and compares the Anieri caan manufacture with the Eng lish, concluding with: '"Look at them both carefully." concluded the sorter smilling, "ami I think you will admit that if there is any difference in the quality of the to, you will say as I do, that the American is better." As a further quotation upon the aibject, it is reliably said that The Metal Worker, after a thorough investigation of the facts in tin case, decided that the progress already made by the new Ameri can tin plate industiy warranted the opening of a separate depart nient in its pages devoted exclu sively to the subject of tin plates. The following is from its report on the present status of tin plate manufacturing in this country : The works which have actually made tin plate up to the present time are as follows : 1. The United Ftati-s Iron and Tin Plate Company, Limited, Detu oiler, Pa. L'. P. II. Laufman & Co., Limited, Apollo, Pa. 3. Norton Pros., Chicago, 111. 4. The St. Louis Stamping Company, St. Louis, Mo. The work w hich are known to be in course of erection are as follows : 1. The Britton Rolling Mill Company, Cleveland, Ohio. 2. Somers Bros.. Brooklyn, N. Y. :. The Lewis S'.eel Sheet and Tin Plate Company, Joliet, 111. 4. The Welsh-American Tin Plate Company, Philadelphia. A hint in regard to the gold that has crossed the Atlantic, is con tinued in the following from the Cincinnati Commercial Gazette, which oints a moral : "The crops of this country are most promhing. Tli8 wheat is bloom ing ; the corn is promising, while in Russia, Germany, France and England there are short crops, and teeming millions who will need bread and meat. These will be supplied from the surplus of the L'nitea States. Thi9 will bring th ; gold back with interest, and with an enormous addition.'' Portland is a growing city. The consolidation vote has shoved it away up in the rating. Then, too, it is reaching out for every thing within grasp. It has in duced the Presbyterians and several other organizations to name it as the next place of meet ing, and now it is bidding for the next meeting of the sovereign grand lodge of Odd Fellows.
