It is imitated that the commission has lest n.uih tiir.e in .. -tabbies over innumerable 'pestions, and that it w ill be ini pjssible to have the exhibition re.idy for the opening in IS'.iS. The I'altimore .nerran is in clined to think that these reports spring mainly from iiteroted and selfish soutces persons who have heen disappointed by not beinit accorded what they imigined to be their due share in icanajring the enterprise, or those w ho have ben denied certain favors ty the directory. There have bteu delays and long discussions ovei preliminary steps, but they have probably facilitated, rather than hindered, the main object by fimiliaii.ingthe iiia aeiu 'tit w ith the vasincss of the undertaking and the details net essary to make it a success. The project is devel oping all the time, and had the management rashly begun work with an imperfect knowledge of their responsibilities much of it would have to be undone, with a greater loss of time ard money than delay will cau-e. In matters of this sort a comprehensive grasp of the scheme, combined w ith an accurate knowledge of details, is absolutely nrceesary, and this can only be giined by patient and p foisted study and labor. When this is once mastered, the execu tion of the plan can go on with surprising rapidity. The man agers, for instance, had not until recently an idea of the part to be played in the exhibition by for eign contitries or the individual states of our own country, and it would have been folly to unfold a plan in which these factors were not asceitaintd with some ap proach to accuracy. They now know fairly well what foriign countries will do, pud they have a significant intimation of the in tentions of the individual sta'es of the Union by the appropriation o( $1,700,000 up t ) date, which w ill probable be increased to $:,0i'', ( K) by the time ail of the state legislatures have iiad a chance to act. The managers are now in sured of all the money they nee 1, and the vexatious preliminary problems having been solved, the work from this time until the World's Fair opers in IS'Ki will be a'mple, the chief problem being to proportion the number of laborers to the magnitude of the undertak ing and the time in which it must ha done. The people of Chicago, we are pursuaded, fully measure pp to the requirements of the occasion, and the public can rest easy in the calm confidence that the Columbus Exhibition of 1S'.:! will he the most magnificent the world lias ever witnesstd. Tiik Chinese law is h;ml on those v!io ihc finnln not strictly their own, r use t lie governments credit to obtain money which they cannot return. Tcheng-Ki Tong, late Ptcretaty ot" the Taria anl ' I-ctul on Chinese Legation, who took advantage of his position to live a luxurious life & plundering fundi placed in his Inn Uf has a r:klizina fioiiH of this fact for the emperor recalled him, and Lis trial j resulted in a senunje 01 ueam. iK-'faulteM in that country cannot escape to any convenient Canada across the hound.iries. for the gov ernment has an unpleasint way of holding the culprits entire of relatives reponpihle for hie sin.", j and proceeding against them ex-1 actly as though thev were the original transgressor. That hrings the dt,'Iiniuent to the front no matter where he may he. There is no escaping the consequeri'-e-i in China. Ii:.vrn has terrors no matter in what simp.- it may com'?, hut when it comes to one who is alone, its terrors genu multiplied. Such was the case the author and musician Mulford, who was found dead in his canoe while on a soli tary trip on the Atlantic cjas'. The Chronhle says of him that 'he death of Prentice Mulford re moves an author whose writings had a distinct California flavor. Mulford touched nothing thathe did not make interesting, and his reminiscences of early days in mining camps are as good as any thing that has ever heen written on pioneer lite. Ut late lie I) ad worshiped strange gods, and sev eral of his papers in the White Cross Library f-uggested the thought his mutually strong mind had been upset by this new fad of the influence of will power, He deserved a better fate than a lonely leath on a solitary canoe excur sion. A yellow fir has been cut in King comity, Washington, near Seattle, that U 113 long, 51x52 inches across the butt, and has 141 annua' tings, and shipped to Chicago to he exhibed at the worlds's fair. Tns recent consolidation vote in Portland seems likely to put an entirely different aspect upon the political control of the city. The people appear to have decided to run the business themselves. The confederate veterans as sembled in Jackson, Mississippi, yesterday for a reunion. A statue of Jefh rson Davis will he unveiled durirg the meeting. A gale on Lake Superior, and cyclones in various localities make up the weekly record from across the Ur -kies. The Sunset slope is about is good as can be found. The supreme court of Conneti cut have rendered a decision that is in reality adverse to the claims of Ihilkely as governor. THE Glorious Fourth EugenE WILL CFLEKUATK, And will give more elaborate and enthusiastic entertainment than any city in the state. Every thing will be provided for a patriotic jubilee.
