It Is Alleged to Be a Grand Bi'.k-Tbfy Refuse to Cancel Engagement Here. The Salem Statesman yester day said : Salem's tirst "giand"' ope.avasa "grand" bilkr The company was coinposed'Vif six people, and they are going to play next at Albany, Eugene ami Mc Minnville, where they should re ceive a very cold reception. Their managers should be arrested for obtaining money under false pre tenses. Tbey scooped up a lot of money out of Sale.n people, at jl.ol) a ticket--probably aliout :iiH. The local managers of the company, are not to blame for this I outrage on the Salem public. The advance j'gent represented !o them that it was really a grand opera, and, in order to secure such an at traction, they gave a heavy guar an'ee. The Statesman begs to be excused for advertising such a bilk it would not have dope so Knowingly. In justice to Miss Abbi Carrington, it should be stated that the has a reaily fn e voice, and so has one of the male support, Mr. Uto. W. Travenc, but the balance of the performers are very "punk." When the Statesman advertises a grand opera for Salem again, it v ill know I that it is a grand opera. .Mes3rs. YA arner & Cranor, o; this city, not desiring to place be fore the public a fake show, tele graphed to the Carrington Co. to cancel their date here for this evening. This the company de clined to do, and replied with the following telegram : Cannot cancel. The Statesman has been prosecuted for libelous slander. The Salem audience was well pleased. Tell your people that we will give perfect satisfac tion or money refunded. The party writing the notice to the Statesman was not at our perform ance at all. The company will ar rive at Albany to-morrow noon. A. K. Cauris;tox. As the matter stands the com pany will doubtless try to till their engagement. hether the public will attend, however, is a different thing. Those wh-j have promised to take seats at $l.f0 each will not be compelled to take them. The subscription paper containing the "names guaranteed is held by Messrs. Warner & Cranor,!ind tSey will not insist upon the contract being can ied out. NORTHWEST NOTES. Totiir KiuTOK hi mr. 1 1 n:iai. Allow us a small space in your paper.in the wish to niakp a state ment, calculated to set aright a feeling of antagonism toward the Y. M.C. A., of this city. When the game of Lull between the Linns and lbanys was pro posed to be played for money, live members of the Albany club, op posed it, from principle, they being members of the Y. M. C. A. and as such they could not consoienci ously play for money among the members of the clubs. At our own suggestion, the manager of our club was petitioned to arrange the game upon a different basis, and we ourselves petitioned our man ager, urging a concess;oit to tin demands of the tirst petition. Some uncharitable persons have seen tit to slur th Y. M, C. A. on the grounds of an "indiscreet" and "uncalled ior" petition, having been circulated by them. We live young men are respon sible for the circul iiiou of th it petition, and such being the case, we make this statement for the purpose of exonerating the Y. M. C. A. and all fignatures of that petition, from all blame w hatever in the matter. If indeed, any one can be Named for such a movement, vie. and not they, are the ones to blame, as they circulated and signed the petition at our instigation. Trusting this statement will set aright the matter and that tlm Y. M. C. A. may be spared any un kind remarks on account of our action in the matter, we remain, Yeiy respectfully, ( i i ; n k E.
