OREGON' PACIFIC TIMETABLE. Arrives Departs rasst-wrer.. Fiiujht U.Upur 12.20 pm . 3.40pm 7.45 a ni The San Francisco Chronicle Fay that the "New York Commer cial Bulletin is correct in its opinion that Americans are becom ing every year more partial to a large mixture of fruit to their diet The national pie is rapidly being displaced. Its stronghold is still in New England, but throughout the great West it has lost its hold and fruit is now as common at tlesert on the tables of the wealthy and the middle classes as it is on those of rich Europeans. All this favors California fruit growers, for the increased demand assures our horticulturists good prices and stimulates the planting of those varieties in which California has rival. In prunes, apricots nectarines, table grapes and raisins we have the call, and it is these fruits which should be given the preference." The claim that the favors are for California alone w ill not stand, for Oregon comes in for a fair share. In prunes Oregon can lead, and our orchardists are beginning to establish the fact that in nectarines we can also compete. In the matter of apricots and the varieties of grapes we of course cannot equal our neighbor, but we stand ahead in the produc tion of the real king of fruits the apple and cherries and the "better varieties of plums will always lead in the markets provided they are put in shape for it. Tim World's Fair at Chicago is already attracting attention, and preparation for it are resounding all over the world. From far away Japan comes notes of inter est in the exposition. Its collet1 tion will be an addition to a bazar of all nations, which is to be located at the intersection of Mid way plaisauce w ith Jackson Park. The exposition directory has granted space for the bazar, and set apart eight acres for it. In this area is expected to be crowded stores of every nation on the globe, and all of them wiTl be allowed to sell trophies and relics of the exposition. Na.ive mer chants will be in charge of these btores, in every case. A company in Japan has sent in a request to be allowed to build a Japanese village, with icturesqtie streets and to people it with 500 Japs. Similar proposition have been re ceived from Cairo and several oriental countries, and the grounds and buildings committee is puzzled to find space for them all. It is not improbable that the larer portion of the ruidwpy plaieance ill le given over to such villages. The operations of swindlers in Omaha, where they roped in a thousand people, collecting half dollars from each one, to witness the ascension of a genuine air ship, only exhibits the trait in human nature that seemingly delightsin being sw indled. While the crowd was staling in open- mouthed astonishment at the mysterious air fchip, carefully covered up, the Chicago operators locked the eates, jumped on fleet steeds and disappeared with tlm coin. Then the dupes km ml that the air ship was only a bundle of old paper. The South American govem ments eeem to be subject to periodic revolts, and unless they have one alout once in every three months they are not healthy or contented. The Argentine Re public is enjoying another one that has arisen in the province of Cordooa. This very unstableness in political matters in the nations cf South America, is the cause ol the speedy return of colonists who have been lured there by natural advantages of the country and the glowing accounts of speculators. A stable government is a requisite ofsuccessiul financial ventures. Ths plan of disappearing from view, when a sufficient amount of peculation lias been accom plished to make it an object, has become a fashionable one. The treasurer of Alton, Illinois, is a teceiit example of that kind. He was found to be $ 10,000 short after his protracted absence had at tracted attention to his accounts. P.eing a prominent church and political leader did not suffice to keep his financial accounts straight. Tiik opposite of the usual method of pardoning out criminals seems to have been employed in an Indiana prison. One old gentleman, over 80 years of age, claims that in 1SS5 he was sentenced for one year for forgery, and that he was kept in prison over 5 years before he was re leased. A rather remarkable case. Buffalo, New York, reports a veritable leaden rain, in whuh small shot fell in a regular shower of an hours duration. The story- is vouched for by policemen, and possibly might be doubted, but several ladies corroborate their recital. "Leaden iron and iron hail" only lacked the latter re quisite. Two Minnesota farn ers, in dis cussing the merits of an irrigation problem, cjuld not settle the ques tion until one ot them brained the other with a hatchet. The hang man will probably suspend the life of the other, and then the question will be settled as far as they are concerned. A displaced Kansas man whose farm had been suld from him by the fcherid', and himself dis- posessed bv forced letral ejectment assisted lv Ins neighbors thrust out the tenant put on the land and entered into repossession How long he will remain is a question, but us seems likely he can hold the tort some time as the entire officials are alliance men lik e himself. The complications are rather promising in that case THK Glorious Fourth EugenE WILL CELEBRATE, And will give more elaborate- and enthusiastic entertainment than any city in the state.
