The jiolice of this city have been on the alert for some time for" a gang of burglars, w ho have been operating throughout the, Willam ette Valley. Yesterday morning Charles Spaght, a young man u ho always has his eyes and ears open, told Chief of Police Hoffman that he thought these cracksmen were camped below this citv. The officer ottered the boy $10 if he could locate the men, and would point out their camp to him. The boy started out on a detective search of his own. He carried a Winchester rifle, and went into the woods near the Jewish cemetery, where le had a suspicion they were stopping. He came upon two men camped in a position concealed fiom the road. The boy told the men that he was hunting pigeons, and sat down and talked some time. After observing closely, the contents of the camp he re turned and notified the police that he bad found the men. Offi cers Hoffman, Lee and McClain and young Spaght proceeded to their rendezvous. As they reached it, one of the men was encoun tered in tle act of leaving. OIK cer I loll'man covered bini with a revolver, and he was soon in irons. Oilicer McClain came upon the other concealed near tho camp. The fellow drew a revolver, when McClain quickly tired at him. The' man started to run, but at another I shot from the officer he fell, and cried out that he was down, j and not to shoot. The I oflicer desiste I, but before i i hey could reach him, be got up and run, escaping in the dense undergrowth. He had on neither coat, hat or shoes. It was after ward i thought that he was not hit at ail. 1 he prisoner was conveyed to jail and the contents of their camp was taken possession of by the oilieers. It contained revolvers, ammunition, keys, drills, saws, in fact a full kit of burglars' tools, besides stolen properly, clothing etc. Among the latt'-r were two silvt r watches, one of which com pletely identified the burglars as thu men w ho robbed the safe of Whitney, Elder Co. at Stayton, as it had a charm attached bear ing the inscription: "L Whitney, Saiitiam Ixxlge No. 25 A. F. & M,"' of Stayton. It is also be lieved that they were the men who robbed I. Beam's store in this city. The search for the oter burglar was continued last evening, but w ithout effect. The prisoner will be taken to examination, in which county Stayton is situated.-. It looks as though Albany did not intend to celebrate this year, and that her patriotic citizens would have to go elsewhere to burn their powder and spend their money. This will take out of this city at least $5000, while an attractive and rousing demons tration on the Fourth day of July would bring in double that amount of money. Not cnly this is to ie considered but Albany did not celebrate last year, and to let a second Fourth of July pass with no celebraMon would look to an outsider as If all was not prosperity, in other words that a season of deteriation settled down on the "Queen City of the Willamette Yallcy.'" This, how ever, I am pleased to note is aot a fact. Improvements are going on on every hand hundreds of new and beautiful residences are being built. The big steel bridge alone is enough to justify one of the grand est demons t rations ever witnessed in this city. L?t Albany be not behind her sister cities, rather in the lead, and oiler attractions that will bring to this city more people than were ever within its limits on any former occasion. If this be done action must be taken immediately, as there is now very lit tle os'er a month to com plete all arrangements for the nations greatest holiday.
