ILe ?tars Dtfeatthe Mascots or Albany 1-y One Sco:e. A game of tastba'l between the Stars of Lebanon and the Mascots .f Albany occurred on the grounds in this city yesterday afternoon. The game was somew hat listle-s until near the close, w hen it came nearly ending in a tie. The score stood at the cljse L'S to -7 in favor of the Stars. The Stars nine is as follows: Ca'way.c; O'Neil, p; Hiking, lb Peehler, l'l; Elliot, ob ; Klepper, If; Harnett, c f; Scott, rf; Hrash, S s. The Mascots w ere : Kennie, c; Marshall, p; Magers,l b; Huston, J b; Mueller, :i h; Walker, 1 f ; Callahan, of; Mack, rf; Vash bnrise, s s. The Stars went to the bat, Elkins wielding the willow. He hit safe and scored on Kenuit's wild throw, followed successively by Klepper, O'Xeil and (Jalaway. Scott sent a fly to second base. Huston performed a juggling feat with the sphere, finally held it and maite a neat double nlav. uut- tiug out Scott and Iirash. Barrett stru k out, retiring the side. Mack took the bat for the Mas cots, but failed to reach tirst. Magera also neglected to reach home. Walker and Mueller scored. Brash's curve found Rennie's head, knocking him down. He was not seriously hurt, however, and took first base and scored. Callahan struck on?, retiring the side. In the next inning Magrrs made a meat high catch on tirst, making a double play. The game was tin event'ul until the sixth inning, w hen the L-banona went to pieces. Riet.ke took Callahan's place, and thirteen scores were piled up when the side retired. O'Xeil then went into the pitcher's box and proved himself as good a pitcher as he is a catcher, which is good enough. In the seventh inning two goose eggs were made. The boys were playing bail. At the beginning of the lat inning, the Mascots were three ahead. The Stars, Ii w ever, scored ; six times. The Albany boys tried i hard to pull up even, but on Mar shall's and Hennie's error the side went our with only two scores, which lacked ju t one of a tie. The scores bv inr.ings stood: 1 ' : 4 ." ti 7 H ! Stars 4 1' 1 7 1 0 : ti 2S Mascot". . . 1' I D :i 2 Pi 0 4 2 L'7 Too many scores were made for a good game, but some line playing was done. O'Xtil pitches a wicked curve and is at home behind the bat. Pert Magers is iood enough as lirst. Walker distinguished himself by good baiting and clever lidd ing. . Mr. and Mrs. Cushing were arraigned in Justice Wood s court, in Portland Thursday morning, on a charge of grand larceny. Both defendants entered a plea of not guilty and the cases were con tinued until the state is ready to piosecute them. The general supposition is that the grand juury will indict Mr. and Mrs. Cushing before they are given a prelimin ary examination in any justice court. Uenidenre fiurneil. I allis Times-Mountaineer. Roseburg Plain Dealer: A few months ago Mr. Wilson of this city discovered in West lioseburg a ledge of mineral bearing rock, an assay of w hich revealed gold, siver and several other valuable metals. silver predominating. Mr. Wilson is now at work developing the mine driving a tunnel in from the east side of the ledge, hich is "between walls" and w idening out as work pro glasses. Specimens were sent to Portland this week for further assav, and if the rock proves to he as rich as its look seem to indicate, the Seven I 'evils mines in Ea-tetn Oregon will have a formidable rival. Southern Oregon is un doubtedly very rich in minerals of almost every kind, out i r some unknown cause capitalists have never attempted to develop our mines. One ol these days some luck prospector will strike a bunanz i and show to the world what it has mised by its neglect. We sincerely hope Mr. Wilson's discoveiy is a valuable one, and that in the near future rabitalists may be induced to co.ne here and thoroughly pro spect the countrv. l'aHse.l Ann;, Two funerals oicuied in one day from the church near Oikville on Thursday. The lirst wa-s that of Win. McBride, a wchknow n citiz. n of that vicinity. The other was the invalid daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred l'.leins, of Tangent. She was nearly Hi years of age and her helplessness has made her an object of tender solicitude by her parents and a consequent itil'ectiou of unusual strength and and they must miss her presence very much. The many who know them and appreciate their worth and sterling character, w ill extend sympathy to them in their lonli ness. The blight beyond where their daughter is freed from the pains of this life is at once their consolation and the star of their hope. New State Law. The first volumes of the new state laws, were received by the secretary of state Thursday, says the Salem Journal, and will 'he sent out at once to various ollicers who are entitled to a copy.
